What a fabulous album 'Dark Star' is.
W2 thought 'Another Day' was a worthy but not great album but with this, his last, Bowie really knocked one right out of the park.
It represents yet another level of creativity and sophistication. It is a real concept album that features fabulous compositions that are shot thru' with the most amazing jazz.
The playing is off the richter scale and W2 particularly loved the horn playing and the percussion.
Much has been said about its messages about mortality and although it's definitely a late night LP, best listened to in its entirety, through headphones and with a large Talisker in hand - it is fare from being morbid or depressing. It's just a great work of art and although the comparisons with Scott Walker's 'Tilt' are understandable, W2 finds 'Dark Star' a more accessible and even work.
OK, we all wished it could have gone on forever but if it had to stop - what a final gift!
It is also fascinating how the jazz idiom is coming more to the for in the recent works of the likes of Ferry, Bowie and Gilmour - a welcome evolution IWNSHO.

Sadly, that has not been true for BF in recent years and that more than anything else is why there will be no "tribute" version of Heroes from Roxy coming anytime soon...

Agreed. I suppose this is the real reason why I never could take "A Special Kind of Guy" to my heart. It`s all there; the vein, the soul, the passion, but it didn`t eclipse neither "To Turn You On" nor "True to Life".

Nice to see DB's character sharing a flat with Bryan Ferry.

Caveat: yes the voice of BF has changed in the years of his work. But even with his 70 years his voice is for me fascinating. I still feel a soothing warmth, security and longing.
Bowie's voice is sometimes abstract, sometimes cold . So on his last album, a really good album. But would it be a BF album, so I was disappointed overall. Bryan is unique for me. A relic of good style and understatement, which is still reflected in his songs. To compare him with other artists is not possible.
Let us return to the voice of Bowie on his album Black Star. True, it sounds typical Bowie moderately, as if Bowie still 30 or 40 years younger. I am not a singer, not even worked in a recording studio, but is that really possible? Is it not perhaps also the technique that enables these typical Bowie song? Had his songs live on stage the quality of voice and sound? It would be nice here once others get even opposite opinions in response. Thank you.

There is no chance of Bryan or Roxy recording a Bowie song. They were all fans of Lennon and The Beatles, but none of them were great fans of Bowiie"s music. But , Bryan may write something about Bowie along the lines of The Only Face or Goddess of Love. And, he may slip in a slow Bowie song on tour !

Bryan has never been the strongest physically. His voice has crumbled on many tours going back to the earliest days of Roxy. He was never able to do huge shows or year long tours like Springsteen, U2, The Stones, etc. We are all human after all and some can do what others can't.

What would be interesting, is if Tony Visconti ever got the chance of producing BF,his work on Bowie's albums has been first class and just might be able to steer BF in a different direction.
