Apologies if this topic has been flogged to death in previous posts... My first Roxy gig was October 21st, 1974 at the Odeon in Edinburgh, the Country Life tour. I was part of a very small group of friends at high school who had been listening to Roxy since the first album came out in June of 1972 and before Virginia Plain was released as single....courtesy of John Peel. We were only 13 at the time so it took a couple of years before we had the cash - and the parental consent (or otherwise) - to get to the gig in Edinburgh. I was recently reminiscing with one of those old school friends who I sat next to at that gig - at least until the Jess Roden Band finished their supporting set - and it is still a very vivid memory for both of us. My last Roxy gig? Newcastle Metro in January 2011. Great to see them play live again, but sound was not so good courtesy of the Metro aircraft hangar affect. |

Great topic, and I don't think it has been flagged, here or elsewhere before. Good you should bring it up at the at the same time The Glasgow Apollo is getting mentioned fondly in the press at the minute. So, obviously, my first Roxy Music gig was on the Siren tour at the Apollo. October '75. Before I posted, I checked the dates on the "tours" info here, and was taken aback to find that there were 3 consecutive nights at The Apollo in '75. I always had it in my head that there were only 2, and I was at the last night. I was definitely at the last night in Glasgow, so it must have been the 3rd night. Reason I know, across the road on Renfield Street, there was, and still is, a huge pub, next to the Pavillion Theatre. After most concerts, the patrons would gather there for the post mortems, and fresh orange juice. That night, we left and walked back along Renfield Street Lane at the side of The Apollo, to find the roadie's were loading the gear onto the wagons. Unless Mr, Ferry is quite protective towards his kit, that would tell me it was at the third night, and they were moving on. Got to see Roxy a further 6 times there, on the further 6 occasions they played it. I have seen them on many occasions, at many venues since, including twice the in wonderful City Of Newcastle. It's easy for me to say, however, Roxy really cranked it up a notch at The Apollo. To be fair, so did most bands. The other great thing about the venue, would be the wait in the queue in the foyer, on the morning the tickets went on sale. The "banter" was always hilarious. The place would be walking out to meet you. It wasn't very well maintained since it changed name, and hands. There was a mat to clean your shoes on the way out. The main stage? 12' high, too high. If you were in the front 4 rows, you would see very little, and miss lots. From the 5th row back, and up to the top two tiers, the place was amazing. Never to be repeated, sadly. My last Roxy gig? Glasgow Armadillo, 28th January 2011. And that was, and will be, the last night in Glasgow for Roxy Music. Great topic, Thanks for posting. Cheers. |

Like Gerry it was the Glasgow Apollo for me too but a year earlier. Oct 74 for the Country Life tour. The pipers, drums, the red velvet curtains with the gold RM crest and the stage explodes into light as Phil hits the first chords of Prairie Rose. The place erupted. 2 songs played that night that I don't think they ever played live again in future tours were All I Want Is You, the single of the time, and If It Takes All Night. A real shame because they went down a storm. Saw Roxy at the Apollo again in 75, 79, both nights in 80 and finally in 82. Oddly in all those gigs, apart from 74, Virginia Plain was never in the set list. Sadly the Apollo was closed in the mid 80's and we have since had to put up with the soulless SECC. Thankfully Roxy used the Armidillo for the 2011 shows. happy memories all round. |

My first was the Glasgow Apollo, 8th October 1975, the first of the 3 nights they played in Glasgow on the "Siren" tour. I had been into Roxy from the start but was a bit too young to see the previous Glasgow shows. The last was the 27th & 28th of January 2011 at the Glasgow Armadillo. |
