It's a topic I have swithered over, not for years, but for decade's. Anyone else here, hear a distinct difference between the music of Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry, and the liking for one or other? I would admit, there are certain Ferry solo albums I would have to swat up upon. So, Roxy Music or Bryan Ferry? Reason's, why's and wherefore's. Cheer's. |

here are some early thoughts on this topic: both canons work for me. I'm an early roxy fanboy at heart, nevertheless, i have liked nearly all of BF's work over the many twists/turns/changes. only early on did i feel they were indeed two different "acts". as BF albums became his vehicle for writing, the distinction blurred. but, i prefer the roxy canon, because...it reflects BF's best writing, and i've always loved the arrangements and playing of andy, phil and paul. some later BF holds its own against his best work: virtually every track of the alphaville sessions, and then, "i thought", "reason/rhyme" as bf voice deteriorates imo, he has yet to find a style working with those limitations which i like much. his 1971/2 and then 73-77, and then 79-84 era vocals are my favourite of any singer, even bowie. finally for now: the more BF does covers, the less compelling i find the material. there are some great exceptions (but few in the later years...maybe spell on you cuts it, most of the others don't for me) |

ROXY MUSIC all the way for me. Liked Ferry stuff from beginning to IYM/TBSB, but then started feeling that what he was bringing to the Roxy table was his old hand-me-downs that he felt weren't good enough for his own albums. Plus the fact that I still believe BF is responsible for the demise of my favourite ever band in pursuit of his own glory. Will never forgive him for that, so stopped buying his CDs and gig tickets. |

Hipsters, If the members of this forum bonded into a Sistine Chapel conclave to decide this issue we'd never see white smoke! For me, there is no need to ponder because Roxy was Ferry's vehicle to play a certain type of music and as the story has evolved the musicians have simply changed and the two personas have morphed into one. I say this because the Roxy story and Ferry's solo career ran in tandem pretty much from the get go and Roxy without our hero would have been non existent. To me this is the difference between a band and a backing group. With a band, the sum of the total is bigger than any individual and if a member leaves a replacement can be recruited and the story moves on. Clearly Roxy sans Ferry is not even a question so the issue could be do you prefer Phil on guitar or Ollie? Personally, I love it all. Regards, Windswept |

Windswept2, like you, I love it all too. Sadie's Boyfriend, thanks for the swithering idea. Much of what is written here is worthy of book which could be called: "Ferry Fans Tell All". The first song I heard was 'Love Is The Drug'. I knew I'd be hooked for life, the voice is the band indeed. |

Interesting thoughts thus far. I would agree, right away, that the whole excercise was and is Ferry's vehicle. I mentioned in the post at the top, that I would need to swat up on solo stuff. Forget the Roxy albums. I think we could all name those tune's in one. After T.B.S.B., and until Frantic, I would find it difficult to put a name to certain tracks on his solo stuff. Between Boy's and Girl's, and Mamouna, there are brilliant Ferry recordings in there. Wasteland, the cover of Fontella's "Rescue Me" from Taxi and Mamouna, the title track, spring to mind. I seem to recall 2 cover versions around that time though, that confluxed me a bit, He'll have to go, and Amazing Grace. Why bother? Then again, his version of Crazy Love is awesome. Still don't know who's chainsaw guitar did the solo. How and ever, as per previous posts in the thread, I love it all also. I will always mantain that although Roxy are iconic, they should have been bigger. Wonder how Bry feels about his great peer parachuting in at number 1 in the album chart this week. If I was ever asked who was my favourite band member from Roxy Music up until '75-'76. I would be stumped. Who would I be upset most at losing? Paul Thompson. Always seen them as a unit, as one. Phil or Ollie? Love Ollie, but Phil for me. Cheers. |

Easiest answer ever. Poor management from the outset, up to, and including now. Far too many missed oportunities. I will cite the latest. Adele. "Make You Feel My Love". Decent management would have alerted every radio station on the planet, and beyond, to Bryan Ferry's version. It was recorded way before Adele's and is far better. For the record, I adore her. The Streisand of her generation. |

Dear hipsters What a great thread . I, too, think that bf/roxy should've been "bigger" commercially. Maybe their "appeal was too selective" ![]() Whilst I'm delighted that Bowie is into number one album position with a bullet, and I love his album, I still think Bryan's recent self-penned work is of a broadly equivalent (at least ) standard. Mr Windswept! If ever I become un-self-employed, could I recruit you to pen my next C.V.? "If we were in the cistine chapel, we would never have white smoke here". Priceless. And I thought I was sharp. I am sure, as in the House Of Common's this afternoon, we shall eventually get cross party agreement on the bill in question. Eventually. |
