This is one for all of you musicians out there. Who, out of the original core members of RM do you feel mastered his instrument(s) best?

I think Phil came the farthest. His early playing could be pretty sloppy but he's quite good now.

I think the same about Phil, he was a great studio guitarist but hit a few bum notes here and there live in the early days. Phil had such a complex sound that was hard to reproduce live in the early years but now it is a lot easier to get those studio sounds live. His playing technique is much better now.

I think Andy had such a distinctive sound and approach to playing sax and that is where his quality lies. He is not as slick as sessioners like David Sanborn or Raphael Ravenscroft but more interesting for it.

And, I'm not really that interested in the "playing" virtuosity in the tech sense. For me, Phil has always sounded very very interesting. That's what I love. And andy has always been outstanding; his style and sound really stands out for me. Sanborn et al are great, but Andy's sound and music takes me to a special place. Andy: the most underated member of roxy imnsho.

Who has come farthest though ? Technically (yawn) or musically (how hard to define!)? No idea.

I can't disagree with anything that's been said above, but TGPT can hold his place with the rest of them. On a long drive today I was listening to the Another Time/Another Place album and was once again struck by the careful and creative drumming on Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.

Or what about the drumming on Viva's Pyjamarama? TGPT holds his own with the rest of the Roxy ensemble.

Got to agree with DC on this!
Paul held it all together, especially in the early days, and those fills.......He didn't get the TG from the TGPT for nothing. Did I read somewhere that BF put the TG in TGPT?
Yes, most of Andy was fantastic too.

That is a question and a half! I could not put a finger on anyone, in particular. They all have qualities, horses for courses, individual solo input's, and the likes. I suppose Eno achieved most, but that would be an answer outwith the context of the question. I would say Paul, but I got into Roxy through Andy. :?:
