Sir, Yet again, the matter of you're subject, to twist a phrase, send's a shiver down my spine. "The Best Gig's" you ask about" and the phraseology? Swoon! While our wonderfull webmaster is involved in other thing's, bookwowm wise, at the minute, I will take the mantle. I was at all the Glasgow shows that Sadie's boyfriend mentions and it is hard to disagree. I maybe got to see Roxy live a year before he did. Apollo Glasgow 24th October 1974. The Country Life tour. Absolutely brilliant from start to finish. |

April 1975 at Sydney's Hordern Pavilion, Roxy seemed light years ahead of anything I'd seen or heard. The Oct 1974 Newcastle gig is probably the most revered Roxy concert of all time. |

A hard one for me to pick my favourite shows because a lot of them have special reasons for me and it was not always about the show or performance. I have seen Roxy Music or Bryan Ferry solo a lot of times and this tour should take me over 100. I have seen them in Sweden, Latvia, Holland, Belgium, Denmark, France, Poland, Russia, Germany, Switzerland. USA. Ireland, England and of course Scotland. to name a few. All these trips had something memorable about them so it is hard to know what influences my fond memories of a gig. The first time I saw them was on the Avalon tour 30th September 1982 at the Glasgow Apollo, some of that is etched into the vinyl of the High Road EP. That was so special, my first time, lost my Roxy/Ferry virginity. Listening to that show/tour now is not something I don't do often as I think it was Roxy live at their lowest, but it was my first time so notning can change that. I remember seeing these dark figures walking across the stage to the sounds of India and could make out Phil & Andy. I had been a fan for 3 years then and up to that point they came out of vinyl, they were a celuloid artefact on the telly, a flash photograph on a faded magazine. Chh Chh Ttt Ttt Chh Chh Ttt Ttt (micking the start to The Main Thing) and on from the right of the stage enters the son of a pit pony handler not looking like the son of a pit pony handler, the Roxy trio of the era were now all on the stage, this was now the real deal, the Flesh + Blood I took what I thought was a short 17 mile train journey from Croy, stopping at Lenzie and Bishopbriggs before reaching the terminus of Queen Street station just 5 minutes walk from the Apollo. Little did I know that this was the start of a huge journey for me, not just in terms of miles around UK, Europe and USA, but a huge part of my own life's journey that has found me working for the band but more important, making the many freinds I have made over the years. In no particular order my top 12 Roxy related live performances/shows are: Roxy Apollo 82 (for the reasons above) Phil Manzanera (Dave Gilmour as guest) at Ronnie Scott's. 2009 I thought I would never hear some of this music live but there it was, right in front of my table as I sipped on red wine. Phil & Dave Gilmour were so close I could read the serial number on their guitars. Roxy Dublin 2001 (First show of the re-union tour) Roxy Glasgow September 2001 (They were just 'pure dead brilliant' that night) Ferry Dublin Bete Noire tour (my first non Glasgow show and the Edge played too) BF Laureus Sports Award (TV recording I was there as part of the crew, many of my sporting icons were there, Ille Nastase, Nadia Comaneci (Looking amazing, it was just her bad luck I was spoken for) and there were a load of guys from the current football scene, Alex Fergusan et al. Roxy Cork 2006, this was great simply because the night before in Dublin was terrible (Andy Newmark had to stand in at the last minute). We feared the worst after the Dublin show but it was amazing. Ferry Frantic tour 2002 930 Club Washington, a real intimate venue, the sort of place that Ferry responds to the best. Roxy Music Montraux 2010, I went for a week and had a great time at the festival (not knowing that the lady with me was 3 weeks pregnant with my wee laddie, now 28 months old) Ferry As Time Goes By Tour Kremlin, Moscow (well it was the Kremlin, you don't find yourself in there often) Roxy Newcastle 2011 (Hearing all those rareley performed songs, i was like a wee boy on Christmas day unwrapping one amazing present after another) Andy Mackay & The Metaphors Pigalle London 2008. This was like an eno era Roxy gig with loads of vintage keyboards and effects pedals wired up in a heath robinson way. Hands up anyone reading this that have heard The Pride And The Pain live?? ....... I rest my case for this gig. J.O'B. |

Mes Amis, To have a thread named in my honour in this hallowed cyber hall has humbled me beyond belief. It has to be the greatest accolade to befall any hipster short of a free Anderson & Sheppard corduroy suite or a night out with a Roxy cover girl (first three albums only please). For a confirmed 'Ferryista' to be recognised on this side of vivaROXYMUSIC.com is a testimony to the generosity of you Eno loving, feather boa wearing types and I salute you one and all! That said I feel obliged to justify my best ever gig selection. Before I do that I have to acknowledge that there are many reasons to like a gig and it's not always to do with the music. For instance, I will never forget loosing my Roxy virginity at their 1972 fandango in Redcar Jazz club. There is always something special about the first time and this was no exception. From what I remember it was all a bit chaotic but most things were at Redcar Jazz Club and once Roxy got going they were spine tingling and we were all seduced into a lifetime of Roxology. I will also always remember Dylanesque in Paris. It was a great show and I was lucky enough to get invited to the after party at the Hotel Costes on rue saint honore. I went along with an American friend and Bryan proved to be an impeccable host. My friend summed it up when he said "after a great show like that, wouldn't it have been disappointing if he'd been a piece of work?" The fact that both he and his son Isaac were absolute gentlemen and a great laugh to boot had us walking on air. I phoned Mrs.Windswept in NYC when I got back to my hotel and she said I sounded like a little boy and should go to sleep! That said, there has to be a best of the best and this is why. 1) ATGB: I was living in Denmark at the time and caught the show in Copenhagen and was so knocked out by it that I saw it a second time in Paris. It had been five years since Mamouna and I was incredibly excited to see how things had evolved. Obviously I'd heard the ATGB album and loved the way he interpreted the songs but nothing could have prepared me for how good the show would be. The eclectic set list, the composition of the band and the standard of musicianship was absolutely peerless. Visually it was a smorgasbord. The string section added amore than a little frisson and the combination of Ferry and Good proved to be the start of an amazing partnership. Intoxicating and adult — frankly it superseded everything that had gone before. The best! 2) FRANTIC: I saw this one at NYC's Beacon. I was living in the States at the time and Mrs.Windswept and I took a couple of fellow Brits to the show. What appealed to me most was the set list, the way it was built and the adjustment of the band line up. Typical Ferry, restless and always moving on. Musically it was note perfect and his rendition of 'Carrickfergus' will haunt me forever. Our friends had never seen him before and were knocked out — tellingly my friend's wife nearly had to be stretchered out! 3) ROXY REVIVAL 2001 - Again I was living in the US and we caught this at Madison Garden and we went with a couple of American friends. We all know the story. It was their first outing in eighteen years and apart from everything else, they were just much better musicians. Furthermore, the band was much strengthened. It included the peerless Mr.Good and it was just ROXY writ large but with added sophistication. Absolutely fabulous and I left proud to be British. Needless to say our American friends, quite significant NYC hipsters, were awestruck. They'd just discovered what cool meant! So, fellow dilettantes, these are my top three and I apologise profusely to all of you who prefer Roxy to Ferry that only one was a Roxy gig. I hope this won't prevent us raising a glass or two together if we meet at this winter's fandango. Who knows, the next show might be the best. Meanwhile a special thanks to Sadie's Boyfriend for launching this thread in my honour. Better than a Knighthood! Regards, Windswept. |
