Apparently the original recording of this concert has been rediscovered by an organisation called Kaleidoscope, including three tracks not otherwise broadcast or released: Stronger Through The Years, Ladytron and Do The Strand. I found out about it here: http://gallifreybase.com/forum/showthre ... 209&page=4

Bryan's eyebrows were ludicrous on this.

I'll say, Bryan had plenty of slap on for that filming!

Love that footage because it starts with 'Manifesto' with Andy honking away from sheet music held on a lyre (because, apparently, he found it so hard to play atonally/randomly, he wrote it down!)

Wonderful stuff, especially after the dark days of '75-then.

Yes, no awards for the gals in Granada TV make-up.

I have this footage but unfortunately the intro and most of the first verse is missing from Stronger Through The Years.

The segue into Ladytron from STTY is superb and the instrumental section at the end of Ladytron is superb especially with Ferry freaking out on synth.

I think that the look they were going for was Prince Namor aka The Sub-Mariner from Marvel Comics...I kid you not. This was mentioned by Antony Price in that mini-docu about the album covers. Additionally, that is why Jerry Hall has the blue tinted skin on the cover of Siren.

The playing on Manifesto isn't atonal, but having it played it live I can tell you that it is a real challenge for a wind player. The chord progression is straight forward enough but changes key every eight bars. This is pretty straightforward for guitarists, and not especially difficult for keyboard players but due to the transposition for the alto sax it is a real mental challenge.

In normal circumstances sharps and flats never mix; in other words in a piece like A Song for Europe Andy is improvising in A major with three sharps. So long as he sticks to three sharps he can't go wrong, which is why he is able to play such great solos over the chord progression. The chords are also very clever, which helps of course.

In Manifesto the progression keeps climbing up a perfect 5. Andy starts off with LOTS of sharps, eight bars later he has to add a sharp, eight bars later he has to add another sharp, and then it becomes easier to think in flats, and eight bars later he has to remove a flat and so on. It is not easy.

On top of that on the various recordings I've heard he's actually playing one of Phil's guitar lines.

Always liked Andy's horns on the title track. They seemed suggestive of ocean liners and such.
The footage I've seen on dvd appears to be an abbreviated version...closer in the tune to when Bryan walked onstage and the vocals began.
