Hipsters,
What a great piece from that absolute rarity, a musical journalist who not only understands Roxology but who can also write!
Great stuff and salutations.

Indeed an interesting article! But all 8 albums should be included. Especially Avalon was not only hugely successful but also sophisticated and original.

Absolutely my thoughts. Great piece. Very rare indeed. The guardian does a lot of good music stuff, doesn't it?

It was a good read and the author is not a Roxy Newbie.

But the absence of Out of the Blue while Thrill of it All amd Whirlwind are included strikes me as simply wrong.

I'm more of a Editions of You fan but I can see choosing Do the Strand in its place. And I while I understand that Remake-Remodel is a centerpiece of the first album, nonetheless Ladytron, ITIS, and 2HB are, at a remove of over 40 years, more interesting tracks IMHO.

Mes Amis,
Somewhat unbelievably I find myself in part harmony with DCJ.
'Whirlwind' did strike me as the lesser morsel in this great list.
Particularly when ITIS, 2HB and Amazona are omitted.
And yes, 40 years on they are, as our American friends would say, awesome!
a bien tot,

Yes, Whirlwind also struck me as the one rather surprising selection. Presumably the author was intent on choosing two tracks from each album, in which case I'd have thought Both Ends Burning and Just Another High had stronger claims from Siren. A cracking article though.

WS2:
We must maintain a public face in which we are to each other a contrarian. But in truth we probably agree more than we don't... And what's wrong with that!!!

Since you mention Amazona I must agree that that is one of the great Roxy tunes. Later this week I am going to a lecture/dinner featuriing Jill Lepore, the author of the recent book on the history of Wonder Woman. I'll be wearing a Roxy T-Shirt and hope somehow to work Amazona into any discussion that I may have with her. And if she doesn't know anything about Roxy/Ferry I will be mightily disappointed...

This is a bit of a shaggy dog story but one of which the members here might enjoy. My previous moniker was NyAzArtist as I split my time between my dump of a NY apt and my spacious Arizona studio. I would drive back and forth between NY and AZ with the seasons. Initially in a 1970 BMW 1602. One time in the late 90's I was stopped at a State/Federal Inspection stop outside of El Paso Texas that a few years later would stop and bust Willie Nelson for pot.
As I pulled up to the front of the line the officer approached me with his sniffer dog. Checked me out and said:
"Where are you coming from?"
( to the melody of Amazona) "Sedona,Arizona"
"Where are you going to?
( to the melody of NYC) "New York City!"
He rolled his eyes and waved me through.
