Having looked at all the other posts, I can see several of my choices amongst them:
REM
The Smiths/Morrissey
Japan (David tried to be Bryan, saw them live, excellent)
Depeche Mode
Talking Heads/David Byrne (he was great live)
Billy Bragg
Snow Patrol
(Early) Pretenders
Gary Numan
Fleetwood Mac (sorry!)
Pixies
Thin Lizzy
The Wedding Present (amazing live)
Kings of Leon

Is there a pattern in people's choices?? Do we care?

*Willy DeVille (Mink DeVille) - DeVille, who passed away in August of 2009, did a rather raw and impassioned version of Bryan's Slave to Love on his album Crow Jane Alley: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mofx9I7rCU0. Mink DeVille's Le Chat Bleu is an auditory work of art.

Powerful Americans in every way.

Sparks, probably the wittiest band in the universe.

I once read a story how Sparks admired anything European and somehow even sung English with a slitely French accent. I also remember how much Beatles and especially The Who inspired them..

This is some interesting vid from 1974-75.

For those who are interested, Julia Thornton is in a new band and they have released their first disk. The band is called Solus 3 and the disk is called The Sky Above The Roof. It can be ordered from their website, Solus3.com or from Itunes.
I guess I'm in the wrong demographic. I had it on my Ipod and it lasted less than The Metaphors. Although the previews of Hazel Mills new disk sounds more promising. I guess my ears are not as adventurous as they used to be. I'm still a Julia fan, just her music is hard to listen to.
