Post subject:  Deep Purple`s «Stormbringer»

The album starts in true DP style with the title track. You can hear the organ. That`s great. Then there are synths; Emerson, Lake & Palmer style. I could live without that. The 3 songs that occupies the rest of side 1 suffer from a severe failure, called “70s rock”. You know that AOR blandness. It could just as well have been The Eagles or Chicago.

Side 2 opens with another rocker in true DP style, but you can`t hear any keyboards. Too bad. Then comes what could be called the funk song of the album. It could just as well have been a song by Earth, Wind and Fire. Then we get another rocker, true to the DP formula, but oh, so tried and tested. Luckily, organ player Jon Lord comes in and saves the song with a solo. The real gems on the album are the 2 songs at the end. “The Gypsy” has great melody, great background riff and beautiful slide guitar. A mid tempo rocker that I wished had lasted longer. Then we get “Soldier of Fortune”, a power ballad. This one too a bit short, but the last two songs together give you about 7 minutes of great music, a parallel to their 7 minutes masterpiece “Mistreated” on the previous album.
