Crikey, nothing like announcing these things in a sensible manner, is there? Don't believe a word of it myself........ PS.......how come there only seem to be about three contributors to this site now? Come out, you intelligent articulate aficionados of doom, wherever you are..........

I ran the article through Google Translate and here's the wording for the relevant paragraph:
"Two years ago presented his latest album, Olympia. Suddenly we see the next album by Bryan Ferry?
Yes, very soon, actually. We are currently working simultaneously on two projects that are quite different from each other. The presented this year in November, is an album in which I return to my origins, with music that reminds me of other times, they are instrumental jazz tunes. The other disc, which we hope to launch next year, is full of new ideas. All songs are new jobs, no big hits or reissues."
* * * I agree that a Spanish newspaper interview seems a bit strange as a venue to drop this info, but there it is.
I wonder what a BF instrumental album will sound like. He's had a few instrumental tunes on various albums over the years, but a whole album??? That's something totally new. I just hope he doesn't play a lot (or even any) harmonica. Maybe I'm an outlier, but I get bored with his harmonica playing pretty quickly...

Thanks for the translation DCJ.
An instrumental jazz album really would be out of left field if it happens. I genuinely don't know what to think. I guess that my initial reaction is that this is definitely not playing safe as Bryan is not particularly renowned for his playing ability. However, you have got to admire him for having a go at something different. There was quite a lot of discussion a while back on this forum about what Bryan should do next and a fair number of us were urging him to take a few risks - but I bet nobody saw this one coming. I am delighted that he still has the capacity to do his own thing and to surprise us. I just hope that he doesn't stick too closely to the standard template for these pieces but tries to do something different with them.
Just a thought, but could the instrumental album be a response to his diminishing vocal power and range? Whatever the motivation, let's hope that he follows through with this and with his plan for an album of new songs. Oh, and let's hope that he takes some crazy risks with the new songs album as well. He says it will be full of new ideas so fingers crossed !

Has to be said I am no fan of jazz so I sincerely hope this is not true. As for an album of new songs, tin hat on here, it better be a lot better than Olympia. Also was writer's block not given as a reason the "new Roxy album" never saw light of day.

Isn't the all-singing, all-dancing sparkly big deluxe re-issue of Roxy Music Album 1 also due out this autumn? I would have assumed BF might be doing some promotional interviews for that so it seems strange timing to divide his time between promoting both that and new solo work.
But then timing has been a bit odd recently with "Olympia" coming out only to be followed by the Roxy FYP shows and only then the actual "Olympia" tour itself.
The diminishing of the BF voice may have influenced the decision to do an instrumental album but it could be a really good record. At least the rate of output is (necessarily) being upped these days.

I heard some of this material being recorded and it is very interesting indeed. There is a twist in these jazz instrumentals and that is just typical of Ferry and why I have been a fan of most of his music all my life.
I am sure Ferry/Roxy fand who also like a bit of jazz will get into this stuff.

It sounds good, John - particularly now that you have confirmed that Bryan is going to spread some "Ferry dust" over it and do things a bit differently.

i like the sound of this. bry's recent vocal got in the way of me fully liking olympia, which i liked tune wise and instrumentally. if bf does jazz, my guess is that it will not sound like charlie parker. atgb instrumentation was quite authentic, but i'm encouraged by john's note that the jazz stuff will have some twists.
