I didn't care much for "Dylanesque" at the time of it's release, after "ATGB" it was my least favourite BF album, but in the last year or so I have started listening to it again and now I think it is great.
I like this tune, the words are poignant...very good.

I think it's superb ! He has this ability to take a great song and make it better, sometimes ! Not always. I didn't like any of ATGB,or his recordings of One Night, Whatever gets you through the Night, Girl of My Best Friend ,Will you still love me tomorrow,You are my sunshine, and there's a few more !!.The Dylan fans will hate it,but Bryan doesn't do Cover Versions. He takes a song and does his interpretation. Sometimes it sounds good, sometimes it doesn't..
More opinions please .......

Well, I actually liked both "One Night" and "Whatever Gets You Through the Night". Maybe it had a slight Roxy flavour and wasn`t so heavily produced as the rest of the album. Girl of My Best...etc come across as too meek and timid to my ears...

What's not to like about it? I am a Dylan fan (but not a fanatic which might make a difference I suppose) and I really like this. Even if people don't like Dylan's delivery (which I can understand - although it grows on you) there is not a lot of scope to criticise his song writing. They are just so ripe for interpreting and some of the greatest "covers" out there are of Dylan songs. As we know, Bryan is a master in this field and I think, with his ageing voice (just a fact of life unfortunately -no disrespect intended) that Dylan's material really suits him. Strangely, I think he sounds best on pared back arrangements that allow the timbre of his voice to come through - which flies in the face of conventional wisdom a little. Of course, it probably helps that Dylan could never sing, even in his prime, so his songs are probably tailored to suit limited vocal ability in the first place.

I am more or less in agreement with Ian S on the songs he lists above - although I do like Bryan's take on Girl of My Best Friend a lot more than the original which I think is pretty rubbish.

My favorite Dylan song is Lay Lady Lay, which I understand was recorded during the Dylanesque session but not included on the final release, which was disappointing. I would love to hear it.

I need to correct what I said here. I was referring to the songs that Ian S listed individually and not ATGB. I think ATGB is a charming album, full of wonderful songs from a golden era of song-writing, sympathetically arranged by Messrs Ferry and Good and beautifully performed by all contributors. A true labour of love! There is a real lightness of touch about ATGB that distinguishes it from the plodding attempts of others who have raided the same songbook over recent years - albeit sometimes with greater commercial success.

Like Dylanesque, it is a specialist album and is therefore hard to compare against BF's normal output - so I can understand why a lot of Bryan's fans might struggle with it. However, it is also, like Dylanesque, an album that Bryan seemed always destined to make.

Having said that, I have to admit that I do struggle to listen to it all the way through in a single sitting, but I often play 7 or 8 tracks at random from the album and really enjoy listening to it that way.

Oh, and "The Way You Look Tonight" is a highlight of Bryan's recording output, IMHO at least.

The song may not be Dylan's finest hour (the man has written so many other good ones...), but still suits BF's voice & vice versa.

I agree with Avondale's first posting on this subject re. the voice and I think BF knows well enough which songs suit his current range, which ones now require back-up vocals and which ones should be left in our memories.

The stripped back acoustic numbers are very effective, IMHO, and a (semi-)acoustic album with guys like Spedding & Colin Good would be really interesting.

Whether it would pay for itself is another matter; sometimes it's all about timing or luck and a MTV Unplugged session a few years ago might have reinvigorated BF's career, just as they did for several other artists.

I still think, for example, that Make You Feel My Love could have been his next Avalon or Jealous Guy if he'd released it as a single before Adele's version. Mind you, if he had, we'd probably all be saying that it had been overplayed by now!

I'd happily buy a Dylanesque Vol. 2, but I suspect that's less likely to happen.

Funnily enough, when I had a few words with TGPT on Wed night, I mentioned how long I'd been waiting to hear Hold On I'm Coming (he said it's a great song to play on too) and that a BF album of Stax & Motown covers might be nice; he tilted his head slightly and nodded, his expression seeming to suggest that it might be interesting too. Perhaps he'll have a word in the right ear! ;)

The voice is a major factor in appreciating a song /singer to me, and I simply adore Bryans voice (weaker or not) and I don't like Dylans voice - so conclusion is easily made.

Was interested to read the transcript of an interview between BF & Dieter Meier of Yello at http://www.electronicbeats.net/music/in ... eter-meier. (This seems to get abbreviated in the VRM forum and I've tried in vain to edit it; the final part should read interviews/bryan-ferry-talks-to-dieter-meier)

In it BF briefly ponders the possibility of an acoustic recording (I mentioned a MTV Unplugged style session in my previous post, so I may change my middle name to Nostradamus!) and, interestingly, confirms that he's currently out of contract and weighing up his options.

It didn't sound like he was at all likely to set up his own label - maybe he'll simply re-sign with Virgin/EMI - but I hope he doesn't end up somewhere where the music only comes out as downloads (singles aren't so much releases as escapees these days!).
