I loved del rey's music. Then I saw her live at Hammersmith two years ago. Such a tedious concert I walked out after three songs. First time ever to exit so quickly.
Whilst I still like the music, it's never been the same for me since.
Elegantly Ageing Hipsters,
The ever tasteful RoxySiren makes an interesting point.
Lana's live persona is clearly a work in progress and she needs to develop her stage craft.
W2 hasn't seen her in concert. At this juncture that's probably a good thing albeit, her live performance on Jools Holland was absolutely note perfect and proved that she can sing beautifully and is no pop fabrication. Her challenge is how to deliver her work in a theatrical way that grips an audience.
This is going to be particularly difficult because the quality of her music means she attracts some mature, discerning dilettantes who have probably seen a gig or two in their time. She is going to be judged against some pretty high standards!
The issue is exacerbated further because the nature of her music dictates, to some extent, a largely stationary performance.
Sometimes, artists overcome this through the force of their charisma and their capacity to develop a dialogue. Leonard Cohen is a classic example of this. His warm humour captivates you immediately. Conversely, although he loves his music, W2 thinks Bob Dylan live is like watching paint dry.
Interestingly, there are some parallels with our hero. The nature of Roxy's early work could have fallen flat live. Some prog rock bands around at that time had become as dull as dish water. Happily, Roxy avoided this because they arrived rehearsed to death and hardly put a foot wrong.
Since then, The Bonny Lad, has been consistently exigent with his stage persona and although he lets the music do the talking, he has consistently developed a level of theatre and charisma that captivates.
Del Ray has to do the same. It won't be easy for her because she's not a natural but she has great taste and huge talent. She should get there. Unfortunately, Amy Winehouse never seemed to really conquer her live demons.
It speaks volumes that she is not touring 'Honeymoon'. Hopefully she's hard at work figuring the whole thing out and will hit the road with a great show.
Salutations,
W2
