Ageing Hipsters, You can listen to the album at http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicbl ... ryan-ferryIt is really quite brilliant. My absolute favourite is "Just Like You". The interpretation works beautifully and the melody is completely haunting. The other two real stand outs are "I Thought" and "The Only Face" but frankly, the whole record is quite magical and achieving that sound is a real testimony to musicianship. Bravo & I can't wait to get my own copy on Friday. Hopefully my bow tie will have arrived by then! Regards, Windswept.

Thanks for the link Windswept. Just given it my first ever listen. I don't think the treatment works on all the songs, but I do have a few favourites already. Quite like the rambling Clarinet (?) on most of the songs. I wonder what other songs he tried out,before deciding on the final 13. .

Dear Ian S, You pose a good question - I wondered what other songs they'd given the treatment to? Personally I'd love them to have tried "Casanova" and "2HB" but maybe they just wouldn't lend themselves to the style. In any event I think it's a great album and I hope they get all of the critical and commercial acclaim that they deserve. It's so refreshing that he innovates whilst others imitate. I absolutely adored ATGB and I think that TJA is an excellent adjunct to his genuine and fastidious obsession with the jazz age. He makes me proud to be British! Regards, Windswept

Cher Monsieur Riff, Interpreting contemporary songs in a way that is predicated on a style from another time or another place surely doesn't equate to lack of innovation? I think it depends on the source material and on the taste and skills of those involved ? Here, I think, we are in the hands of great artists. The album is beautiful and great fun! Regards, Windswept

The bulk of my monstrous CD collection is jazz, although of rather later styles (the decade 1955-1965 would be the golden one for me), so I've been looking forward to hearing The Jazz Age.
I tend to agree with Windswept2 & Helen that the slower numbers (e.g. Just Like You, The Only Face & This Island Earth) work best, although I Thought lends itself quite neatly to jazz interpretation.
Of the other tracks, Love Is The Drug & Reason Or Rhyme are growing on me the quickest.

The slower ones are the best for me. Reason or Rhyme, Avalon , I Thought , The Only Face and Just Like You sound good.The rest ,I wouldn't miss.
