for a talk show like j ross, the music is a low priority & it's not your gig! thus, backing track & live vocals. this is also to do with logistics - you don't have the time to set it up fully live as you are a tiny section of the show. i guess there was an exemption for roxy on ross on the beeb as it was his last show…the guitar was obviously live as there is no solo on the record...
also, the performance is either recorded first or last, and after a break to reset, not straight after the interview as it looks on tv. thus you have to either play to a cold audience, or at the end when everyone wants to go home…
jools is focused on live music, so there is one day with each band getting 2 hours to setup & soundcheck, and then an hour each again for camera on the show day. the music is the focus, not the aside, and that's why it's so good.
