Cher Richard, Although I don't think 'In The Midnight Hour' is the best opener. I have to say that 'Running Wild' is a brilliant closer. N'est-ce-pas? Salutations W2 Dear W2 , running wild is so good...what a shame midnight hour so isn't. Richard's right; that opener let's down the Roxy show somewhat. Merci

Remember, Bryan`s voice peaked on this album, if not to say on this song. It was a cover song, but who cares? -One of the best Roxy songs ever. I would gladly greet a ninth Roxy album containing a couple of cover songs. Mmmmmm - no covers on a Roxy album please - I have erased them from my copy of F&B

I take Richard's points about no Roxy covers - its just not Roxy Music. It's Ferry. As I recall, Ferry had picked "In the Midnight Hour " for Roxy Music to perform on the Kenny Everett Hogmanay show in 1979. I guess they just kept it back to add to Flesh+Blood. And "Eight Miles High " thrown. And of course , "Jealous Guy" gave Roxy the number one slot in the UK in early '81. And then the Avalon tour..... " Can't let go" was out of place, and "Like A Hurricane", which I actually like a lot. I wouldn't mind to hear a studio version of that song.

Philosophical Philanderers, Windswept understands this perspective mais, il n'as pas d'accord. IWNSHO, Roxy is Ferry and Ferry is Roxy. Personally, he likes 'In The Midnight Hour' but just doesn't think it's a great opener. 'Same Old Scene' would have seen them leave the starting blocks at a pace and with a track that better captures the ambiance of the F&B set. Writing this turns W2's mind to Brighton. Preparations are underway albeit there is a wardrobe hiatus. The October 7th date is playing havoc with Mrs.W choices and she is claiming that the autumn timing necessitates a completely new transitional outfit! This is turning into the most expensive fandango in history. We've already incurred the cost of summer outfits and a commiseration evening in Brighton with our good friends. If the Bonny Lad cancels this one, W2 will send him the Bill. That said, the great thing about a postponement is you get the excitement of the pre-show build up twice so maybe he should charge double? On a more serious note, W2 read a great article about vocal health for singers (Adele's operation etc.) and he hopes our hero is taking good care of his instrument. Salutations, W2

I'm not sure what IWNSHO means , but a google search links it back to this Forum. And to Gardner , who may have just passed on after reading Windswept's subsequent comment.
And Richard, and DCJ....

It seems to be a widely-held belief that it's ok for Bryan solo albums to include cover versions, because Bryan is an interpreter par excellence of other people's work, but if Roxy should include a cover version on any of their studio albums (such as the two on Flesh + Blood) then it must be due to a lack of original material at the time. Not totally sure that's fair. Perhaps Andy, Phil and Paul just enjoy playing other people's songs as well as their own.

I have no idea what IWNSHO means ... Perhaps something about an honest opinion ?! Also , I forgot about the Kenny Everett video show !!I remember loving the count in to Hogmanay on that. So - 'IGHO' I loved the count in on the telly , in the song and as an intro to the album . It was so simple and so very effective - I still like hearing it ( if i ever play F and B which is not often ). HOWEVER having thought about the bigger question - I'd say The Thrill of it all and Prairie Rose for Roxy music .... and Sensation and Boys and girls for Bryan Ferry . But as an lone album ending ...i've always loved the end section of Another Time Another Place......

Very good thread. In PMNSHO (useless to google that ) the best opening and closing tracks are on 'Roxy Music': The party sounds and the piano chords at the beginning of the crazy 'Remake-Remodel' and the tangoesque 'Bitters' End' as a short encore are fantastic. The whole album is like a suite of songs. If the question would have only been 'Best Opening Track' I would have chosen 'Do The Strand', 'Street Life' or 'The 'In'-Crowd'. 'Best Closing Track': 'Another Time, Another Place' or ''I Thought'.

Philosophical Philanderers,
IWNSHO (In Windswept's Not So Humble Opinion), the ever tasteful pianoman makes a fantastic point about the speakeasy piano intro on 'Remake-Remodel'. It's these touches that make Roxy sublime.
That said, it's not enough to make W2 change his mind - FYP get's it. How could you not want to dance on Mabel's table?
Salutations, W2

It's been a long summer and WS2 has apparently been a bit forgetful in taking his meds, thus he slips back to his beloved trope that BF is Roxy (and vv)
Sigh.
Perhaps if he was forced to listen to "Is Your Love Strong Enough" over and over during the course of a long evening trapped in a wine cellar he could be shaken from this belief. But anything short of this will prove futile I'm afraid. He holds to this tenet like a rock in the sea!
On another subject, it seems like BF has been very quiet since the unexpected denouement of his Spring Brit Tour. No festivals or other one-off gigs. Interesting, because he usually does SOMETHING during the summer months in terms of public performances... Hmmm. Maybe the strain of getting the DELUXE reissue of the Roxy Music album has sapped all his energy...
