[quote="rendezvous"]W2's comment - paralleling The Velvet's commercial failure in the USA, yet subsequent cultural cache - is spot on, well said.

And then Teresa mentions the Nighthawks painting (which reflects such haunting ships in the night pathos, perfect for Bryan) - another gem contributor joins the fold!

I was thinking about the USA success dilemma over the weekend and it struck me that if Roxy had started with Siren - and their only big US hit single LITD, that would have given them early inroads into the commercial US market. Then had they not taken a sabbatical and followed up the year after with Manifesto, then F+B the year after that, I reckon they would have been huge over there.

Just a thought, (thank God they didn't mind!!) :D[/quote

Thank you Rendezvous :) I did not see these replies until today! I am still a little unfamiliar about where to reply to a post. Do I reply under "quote" or new reply? I wonder why I was not able to see these replies until now?
I love what you said about Nighthawks
It also has a perfect Noir mood.
And so true about starting off with LITD!

Hi Teresa, hope you are well.

Hi Smudge, your summarisation of Franglais posts was spot on.

Hope you are well also.

Cheers,
Zappa.

All good here, thanks, Zappa. :)

Hello Zappa and Smudge;
Thank you for your post. I'm hanging in there. Such loss is at times unbearable. Now I feel like a part of the artwork "Nighthawks" that I always found so fascinating. :(

I'm sorry I do not speak French but can understand the words that you did use

It has regularly struck me that those who post here partly in French or "Franglais" may have lost sight of the fact that many here possibly won't understand the words & phrases used... Surely it's a bit counter-productive if it encourages readers to bypass those posts?

It raises different problems for those of us who did study the language for several years; the anally retentive part of me has to resist the urge to correct some of the spelling & grammar!

Welcome aboard, Teresa; I hope you'll enjoy it here. :)

Hello Smudge,
I will try and avoid Franglais but I do like to learn new words and enjoy when others use French in postings. I would not be at all offended if you ever do see me use a phrase incorrectly and corrected me! Thank you Smudge

Probably the most used phrase on this forum. Always calls to mind one Commander Montgomery Scott - "aye, and if my Grandmother had wheels, she'd be a wagon". :D

Hello UK Richard,
:D. Every time I hear that quote from Scotty I laugh Is it from Star Trek IV?

Rest assured, I won't do that (to you or anyone else), Teresa. :)

Sadly, I know a small number of fans have ceased looking in here because they found postings in foreign languages a bit pretentious, quite apart from the difficulties they pose for readers without the skills to fully understand them.

However, I'd risk alienating even more here, if I produced a red pen and started acting like a would-be schoolmaster (a role for which I'm totally unqualified anyway!). ;)
