Anyone think of any songs that you thought would sound great live, but sounded crap when performed ? I always thought Love Me Madly, Tokyo Joe, This is Tomorrow, Same Old Scene, Kiss & Tell and Sensation would sound great live . But they didn't !! The studio versions were great. The live versions, not so great.

Funny that, as I think My Only Love live in Frejus is the best I've ever heard live. Much prefer it done without all the wailing from the backing singers.

Ditch the wailers and bring back AM on sax and I'm a happy bunny.

It`s AM on sax that`s missing, plus the impatient disco pulse from the studio version.

The AM sax was a great finish to the song. Wonder why they changed it and went for the tame girl vocal ending.

I like the "wailing"! And I think Same Old Scene was a highlight on the 02 concert.
All the material on Avalon seems to be difficult to reproduce on stage.
I also miss AM;s sound, but I prefer to watch Jorja!

By the way, I watched the Nobel Peace concert yesterday - Bryan should have been there, of course performing A Song for Europe!

Songs I think are worse live than on record:
Avalon
More than this (the key change kills it)
Lets stick together (always think it needs more horns)

Songs I think are better live than on record:
Out of the blue
2HB (from last Roxy tour)
Heart still beating (like version performed on the 2001 tour)

My favourite track ITIS sounds fantastic both on record and live, however I wish he would use male backing vocals on the last part rather than female backing singers as he favours these days.

I thought the flesh and blood tour improved the f+b title track itself greatly... (wasn't the album version weak?) In contrast, the version of dance away with the drum solo was truly hideous. And I wasn't a big fan of the track to begin with.

I agree. Flesh + Blood really worked. Lots more energy, noise and anger !!

Merry Aficionados,
Ferry's capacity to constantly evolve his live act never ceases to amaze me.
His arrangements seem to get stronger and more textured on most songs and the total show just keeps getting better and better.
A personal favourite of mine is "Casanova". I love that song to the extent that I considered adopting it as my moniker before I baptised myself "Windswept".
The live rendition of this gem that I particularly like is from the ATGB tour. It was such a great performance. The song fitted perfectly into the set and the band really swung. Visually it was also quite stunning due in no small part to the smoking hot string section. Peerless!
On the less strong front, I have to agree with the great Helen, "My Only Love" suffers when the sax finale is vocalised. That said it remains a great song.
One track that I would love to see performed live is "Running Wild".
My youngest son saw it performed on the 2010 festival tour but I don't do fields so I missed out. I'm just hoping it makes it into next years show!
As I said at the outset his performances just keep getting better and I swear to God, he's the only guy I know who's dancing is actually improving with age - I watched the Frejus and Le Grand Rex DVD's the other day and his performance in Paris was way more refined.
By contrast, The Stones live — with the exception of Charlie Watts - are looking like escapees from a care home that have stolen their grand children's clothes. Jagger looks like he is doing an over animated wedding dance whilst Ron and Keef wheeze in the wings. They were way better in 1966.
Happily, our hero has aged with great style and grace. We can be proud!
Regards,
Windswept
