According to the official response to a query on the BF Facebook page a London show will be "in 2016 due to venue availability". So presumably the Avonmore tour will continue into 2016 despite Bryan's declared intention of returning to the studio soon. Perhaps it will be a one-off for those of us disappointed this year? :?

Hedonistic Hipsters,

Great news that 'Beauty Queen' is back!

Now, for Brighton, if we could just add "Mother Of Pearl' and 'Serenade' whilst re-instating 'Out Of The Blue' we will be perilously close to perfection.

W2 is very excited!

Salutations,

Windswept

Elegantly Ageing Hipsters,

Now the party's over Windswept is so tired but he can't resist reporting back on last night's final Avonmore fandango at Brighton's Dome.

Regular readers will remember that although excited, W2 was approaching this show with a level of trepidation.

It had been some months since his last live FerryFix (BFWS in Dublin) and W2's normal blind faith in our hero's activities was being tested. The American leg, together with the Baloise sessions and Glastonbury were giving credence to allegations that this band was 'Roxy Lite' (tmDCJ). It seemed that we were witnessing a rare miss step with them falling short when compared with previous line ups.

Well, we needn't have worried, last nights performance in the city that permanently helps the police with its enquiries was a solid testimony to a year being a long time in rock. 'Roxy lite' had morphed into 'Roxy Heavy' (tm RoxySiren) and what a show they put on!

Of course, we are talking about a completely different line up. Cherisse Osei, Guy Pratt and Steve Jones have been replaced with Luke Bullen, Jimmy Sims and Neil Hubbard. In addition, vocals have been further enhanced by the addition of Fonzi Thornton and Lucy Wilkins has joined the band on violin.

What a difference these changes have made. IWNSHO (In Windswept's Not So Humble Opinion) he has seldom seen such a transformation in a band - they are as tight as a duck's proverbial.

Luke Bullen is very definitely in the Paul Thompson and Andy Newark league and brings some real heft to the sound and Jimmy Simms is a simply brilliant bass player.

The introduction of stalwart Neil Hubbard on rhythm and sometimes shared lead has given texture and depth to the guitar sound and Lucy Wilkins' sublime violin adds a real frisson to the whole affair.

W2 has always loved Jorja Chalmers' playing and certainly, Paul Beard's keyboards are beyond reproach. The backing vocals have always been good and adding Fonzi has given more balance.

All said, however good the component parts are, it's how they play together and respond to The Bonny Lad that counts and here we have the biggest change. This outfit really rocks, has a genuine enthusiasm for the music and have started to add their own feel to arrangements.

After the pomp and splendour of AEWBF, the set was more back to basics. The first half was performed against a dark curtain that made W2 feel like he was back in Redcar Jazz club in '72 and that illegal substances would be passed around shortly.

Music's coolest Septuagenarian arrived 'sans cravate' (he has clearly pushed the sartorial louche button for this outing) and Avonmore had us transported to Ferryland in seconds flat.

The set list is well known in these circles. That said, it has evolved, is well crafted but given the breadth of his back catalogue, he'll never please all the people all of the time but he came perilously close.

W2's personal favourites from the evening were 'Avonmore', 'Beauty Queen' (Valarie would have been pleased), 'Stronger Through The Years', a great version of 'BĂȘte noire' and 'Do The Strand'.

All in all,it was a great show. Our hero was in fine voice. The band really rocked and everybody looked like they were having the time of their lives. The Brightonians responded accordingly and rushed the stage at a speed that belied their age.

One observation that W2 did have as a veteran of countless fandangos is that Ferry's shows are becoming like Bond movies. The beginning and middle parts are more interesting than the end. Once you are in the villains lair and 'Let's Stick Together' kicks in you know what you are going to get. The opportunity for a more creative finale exists.

That said, it was all very exciting, Mr & Mrs Windswept had a great time. It was lovely to meet some of the ghosts from this hallowed cyber hall. This band is a real keeper - 'Lite' has become 'Heavy' and is all the better for it but it just goes to show the effort and time it takes to get a band to this level but there again, they are supporting the greatest.

Can't wait for London next year.

Salutations,

W2

I am pleased to read that the Brighton Finale went down a storm. For those who don't use Facebook this photo was posted on the Bryan Ferry page yesterday, "Team Ferry".

Cher Monsieur Windswept,

a great review and I'm happy to hear it was a great concert, which obviously proves the European shows were not just rehearsals, because as Pianoman has pointed out

.

I agree with your evaluation of the current band, this constellation really works. And Avonmore is a fantastic opener, it is so dynamic, so funky and intense it really has the audience fascinated and enchanted from the very first split second. And, sadly I also agree with your assessment of the end:

I feel exactly the same. I'm still partially thinking it's probably because I've heard the socalled "crowd pleasers" too often, but I'm starting to think maybe it's time for a change...

Thanks for sharing Monsieur Windswept. The live tour has been a great success (albeit with a slight pause) and agree the band deserve a lot of credit too.

I enjoy the party finale as I think it gives the gig (?) an added dimension and enjoyment for all who come to see.

However, the group photo does look rather sartorially casual.

Here's to next year.

Cher Topiary,
Vous avez raison, W2 thinks the hipster vibe is having an influence on our hero!

The Munich concert will be broadcasted on another German radio station on 28th of March:

there will be a rerun on Saturday, 2nd of April.

Let's just hope that this radio station will come up with a better selection of tracks than BR did. 8-)
