Hi Teresa,

Well, it's pretty hard to go wrong with Edward Hopper. Nighthawks is surely among the best evocations of how lonely one's own thoughts or absence of same can sometimes be. Perhaps they're feeling knocked down enough by life to prefer not to think at all for half an hour over coffee. Coffee, never a good or helpful companion to misery, when perhaps they're longing for a stiff drink. (I would be, were I in that picture.) It's a strong, muscular, challenging piece, among my favorites.

Hi Sonnet, thanks for that reply!

Spot on, as our British friends say..
Perfectly Worded...

Nighthawks..
The Name Alone is Perfect
Such Strong Emotion in that painting
Lonliness, Longing, maybe Melancholy
A Noir Film Scene Certainly

The first time I saw it I was, like many many others
Immediately and Permanently attracted to it
And I could not put into words Why

For me it's a picture full of secrets, lives lived quite possibly in some regrettable ways, yet so accessible we can without conscious thought project our own secrets and regrets into the scene. It's okay to not necessarily feel able to attach descriptive words to it. Visual art goes beyond words.

Teresa and Sonnet 18,

Lovely comments and thoughts.

HRoxySiren,

You're great.

Meet me in Plymouth, we need to stop these yanks taking over....I will be wearing a green balaclava.

Nonchalantly.

I'm half-Russian, for which heritage I feel little affinity, and half-Scot with a little Welsh tossed in, for which I feel ginormous affinity, so maybe that gives me a teeny smidgeon of U.K. cred. Not to worry, we won't crash the secret meeting of the green balaclavas.

:D
