Vejle, Denmark. 11.5.2016.
Review 2:

Well dressed in Vejle - Ferry in fine form despite grizzled vocals
If you read concert reviews of Bryan Ferry, is one of the most frequently occurring word "elegant". The man praised as often for his ability to appear enthusiastic and immaculately dressed as for his music, and this warm evening in Vejle is no exception. That he last year celebrated its 70 years, is not to see. Tall, slim and only partly grizzled (the latter can of course easily A quick fix), with a side parting, which could be designed by Bjarke Ingels and a suit, he seems to be born and raised in, exudes Ferry profits and class.
He is also in good musical company. A band of all ten people, specifically three guitarists (one of them, however, first entered midway through the show), a keyboard player, a bass player, a drummer and then not at least two backup singers and a saxophonist and a violinst do their best to ensure that it is a successful evening. We are not many bars into the opening track "Avonmore" before it is clear that Ferry has brought a highly accomplished and well played orchestra and the sound is even distinguished, where each instrument is clear from each other.
"Avonmore" is the title track from Ferry's latest album from 2014, and it is the only song from what album we are going to hear. And actually the only song that is not from the 70s or 80s or even older, if we talk handset relatively many cover songs. It is a hitspækket "best of" kit, Ferry diverter with which half of the songs comes from his old band, the style-glam rockers Roxy Music.
Interest quickly it seems clear that the Ferry visually remains excellent, his croonerstemme lost a bit of former strength. The two excellent, soul influenced singers seem to buoy him much of the time, and when they occasionally tier, as in the two subdued Dylan interpretations "Bob Dylan's Dream" and "Do not Think Twice, It's Alright", works Ferry's voice somewhat anonymous and hesitant - he is however sharp the harp and also plays the keyboard from time to time. Later, in Roxy Music hit "More than This" is falsetto passages set several tones down and what Ferry has lost the top, he seems not to have won in depth.
Danish scene dynamite
Ferry does not speak much between songs and ignores a fans attempted to hand a rose, but have praised the Swedish heating name Nea Nelson and presented the band members, among others, the Danish guitarist Jens Quistgaard. Just Quistgaard into character with strong solo passages in several songs, like saxophonist Jorja Chalmers plays a prominent role in many numbers, not least the beautiful Roxy Music-instrumental "Tara". She is also højtlydte applause from the increasingly excited audience, but also the two other guitarists and violinists stand out with beautifully played solos.
The sold-out concert is exclusively for a seated audience (each of which has put 795, - at the entrance), and in advance I had feared how the sometimes quite rocked Roxy Music tracks would suit the slightly mundane atmosphere where Ferrys often more subdued solo material (such as the hit "Slave to Love" and the lesser known "Zamba") and cover songs (such as Jerome Kern standard "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes") immediately would fall better into. It turns out, however, not as a major problem during the concert, where Ferry also has put some of the more extroverted songs late in the set - and since Roxy Music's "Love is the Drug" will raise the audience, and there they are.
The highly evocative lighting turns the finishing touch with, among other luminous strips on the floor in blue and red, changing tones of blue, purple and red and a disco ball in the ceiling of John Lennon's immortal ballad "Jealous Guy". A song that we get the second out of three encores before Roxy Music's energetic "Editions of You" shuts down, and Ferry waving and smiling with highly polished teeth.
In a time when the great rock icons from the 60s, 70s and even 80s goes away with a little too high frequency, it is a pleasure to see Bryan Ferry in fine form. Even if he has his heyday behind and has lost little of his voice resiliency. Ferry is a frequent guest in Denmark. He thus played in Copenhagen, Randers and Esbjerg in 2014 and is on stage for a sold DR Concert Hall on May 13, and he will be welcome back again - anytime and anywhere.

Hedonistic Hipsters,
Do any of you Forensic Ferryistas out there know who the mystery third guitarist was and which tracks he played on ?
A great set of photos from Roxyboy - W2 loves our hero's louche suit - class example of sartorial excellence - clearly not to be worn to Waitrose but perfect for a cocktail when you "sit in this empty cafe thinking of you."
Salutations,
W2

I read on social media that his name is Linus Taylor. He tweeted that he was playing both gigs in Denmark and it sounds as though he played all of both gigs (i.e. as third guitar); maybe those who attended can confirm if this was the case?

Hmmm. Does this mean that either NH or JQ are to be replaced once the tour returns during the summer. Remember how TGPT shared drum chores mid-tour with Andy Newmark back in 2011 and then replaced him? It will be interesting to see what happens...

Mes Amis,

Peut être DCJ is correct.

If so it looks like he's going for another highly skilled journeyman guitarist rather than one of the stalwarts.

W2 would have loved to see Oliver Thompson in this line up but perhaps with Linus Taylor the guitar department will get that little je ne sais quoi that it needs.

Salutations,

W2

Ps. Super photo of Jorja Chalmers. She really is the femme fatale of saxophonists. What a great musician!
