I hope WS2 has a splendid evening with the Bryan Ferry Band and I'm eagerly awaiting the latest issue of the Windswept Morning Post ;-)

Both Ends Burning: I prefer the original because I am not sure whether a background choir fits in here (or in other Roxy songs - negative example: Cry, Cry, Cry).

The Viva! live version is great because of the brilliant transition from CM to BEB - great harmonica playing, as WS2 mentioned.

Apollo 2001: Good to have them back at that time but a little bit too fast ...

Heart Still Beating: Faster than the original but I like this one, too.

Conclusion: My #1 is the original version but every live version of BEB has its own charm, too.

À bientôt,

Hipsters,

The ever tasteful Pianoman makes some interesting comments that has made W2 reflect:

Do backing vocals enhance early VOs ?

Windswept thinks it depends. With regards to BEB he thinks the addittion is very positive because it gives the song even more energy. It really makes it burn !

Is faster than the original a good thing ?

Something W2 dislikes and he was reminded of it when playing tracks back to back is how the tempo of a number of original versions is moved up for the live performances. For the most part W2 doesn't approve of this practice - it doesn't add anything and seems to make the songs less poignant.

But this is just one man's view.

Salutations,

W2

Excluding verses is even more irritating.

When one of my teenage anthems, "Street Life," was shortened on the 2001 tour, I was soooooooo upset.

Plus it was just a little too smoothed out (no rough, cacophonous edges). :|
