Starting a new thread here as I am fascinated to see the real split between two camps on this album - those who love it, as I do, and those who really dislike it.
More to come, ...

No arguments from me; 'In your Mind' is my favourite Ferry album by a country mile, always has been.

My problem with the 80's stuff is that it became so samey, you could shuffle all of those album tracks around and still have the same sounding album.

And you're right, I think it has a lot to do with when you came to Roxy/Ferry? My first Roxy gig was Finsbury Park Rainbow circa 'Stranded', well before cover versions, session musicians and formulaic songs.

But then again, it may just be these rose tinted glasses I continue to wear?!?!?

My favourite solo album by some distance too. Having essentially become a fan around the start of the "hiatus" it was the first album of original Ferry material I bought at the time of its release. For someone who has traditionally struggled to come up with lyrics the Ferry songs on IYM have quite a lot of them! By all accounts the recording was somewhat problematic with Chris Thomas walking out as producer during the sessions and Steve Nye stepping in to finish things, so perhaps that is a factor in why BF seems reluctant to admit any fondness for the record or to include its material in set lists regularly?

In Your Mind is easily my favourite solo offering too.

In my opinion Bryan spent the best part of 2 decades perfecting the wrong sound, starting with Flesh and Blood (or, more accurately, starting with the disco friendly rework of some of Manifesto). He seemed to become so obsessed with perfection that he polished the life and soul out of everything he touched. Give me a bit of rough with an emotional kick anytime over cold perfection.

It was only with the release of the charming and delightful ATGB that my interest in anything new by him was triggered. Albeit that ATGB is a specialist album it did herald a renaissance of sorts in his music, praise be !!!

As for the “Noir Triptych”, the songs are so forgettable that, with the exception of the chorus of Slave to Love, and a tiny snippet of Don’t Stop the Dance, New Town, and NYC, I genuinely can’t sing any of the tracks from these albums in my head. I am sure that there must be some decent songs trapped in these albums just bursting to get out so I do like WS2’s suggestion of re-working some of them.

My least played 5 are, in chronological order because I never play any of them nowadays: Flesh & Blood, Avalon, Boys and Girls, Bete Noire and Avonmore. I don’t count The Jazz Age as a BF album, but if you do, then you can add that to the list.

Oh that is soooo well put and spot on!

Love the collective title! But once again you're right, me neither?

"I don’t count The Jazz Age as a BF album, but if you do, then you can add that to the list."

Don't own it, never will, more desecration of classic Roxy songs.

Someone once said (it may even have been me?) that Bryan Ferry put his carpet slippers on for good from the second side of 'Manifesto' onwards! That's certainly how I feel when I compare 'In Your Mind' with everything that followed.

Reading your comments, I had to check and make sure I hadn't written them! But then I would add Taxi and Mammouna to the list of least played!

IYM is my favorite Ferry solo as well. Great songs, well sung, a great band and some real passion behind the performances. Love Me Madly Again, just for Anne Odell's strings and Spedding's lead part is to my ears, the best thing Ferry's ever done.

It is good to know that there are a few of us like-minded types still out there, Stabbs. Having hung up my working tools and put on my carpet slippers recently, I have started to think that the old certainties can no longer be taken for granted, so I am reassured that I am not alone on this one.

In a way, I wish that you were right about the 2nd side of Manifesto being the point where BF hung up his working tools, but I suspect that he sweated blood over the Noir Triptych solo albums. That amount of polishing takes a lot of elbow grease, after all.

Sadlly, I can’t claim the Noir Triptych collective title for my own, although I wish that I could as it is so apt. WS2 used it in a recent post and I just latched on to it. That man does have a way with words!

PS - I don’t own a copy of The Jazz Age either.

From JO'B's contribution to an earlier thread that served to kick off this one -
Quote:
I am going to stick my neck out here and say that no matter how hard I try and how often I play In Your Mind I just can't get to past feeling it is no more than an ordinary album.

This has long been my sentiment. At the time of its release, I was consumed with excitement that this was BF's first self-penned solo outing and I loved how This Is Tomorrow heralded it in style. I still love that song and have a lot of affection for Love Me Madly Again but two things speak volumes for me. Firstly that the follow up single only fared as well as it did in the chart because radio latched on to the far superior B side that had nothing to do with IYM and secondly, when did I last feel a need to listen to this album? When I bought the remaster in 1999. For me, the rather lightweight content made it almost redundant as soon as the depth and darkness of its follow up emerged a year later.

BF has said in the past it's his least favourite album, so I feel I'm in good company! :D

I didn’t post here for several weeks but I read everything. Some thoughts on the last threads:

IN YOUR MIND: The only thing I don’t like is the cover. The record is full of really good songwriting with a lot of different harmonies and rhythms. My favourites: All Night Operator, One Kiss + Party Doll.

LEAST FAVOURITE FERRY ALBUMS: Taxi, Mamouna (except for the title track), Dylanesque + The Jazz Age, if considered as a BF album. But I like Bete Noir + Avonmore, sorry 8-)

FAVOURITE FERRY ALBUM: The Bride Stripped Bare

FERRY TOUR UK: I was a little bit astonished about the set list, though for example the rearranged Mamouna must have been a highlight (thanks to Roxy for posting this on YouTube!). Concerning my German BF concert in July I can only hope that he variates the set list, otherwise this would be the third show with a similar program within 3 years

BRYAN’S FUTURE: I can imagine that acoustic versions of Roxy/Ferry songs could mark the last chapter of Bryan's work in the studio or on stage, even with new material, if he is still writing songs these days. Bryan as a chansonnier, why not :D ?

COVER BAND: You're right, Stabbs, Bryan leads his own cover band. But it's the same as with Status Quo, 10 CC, ELO, Foreigner (original keyboarder) etc. But it's better than neither Roxy Music nor Bryan's Roxy Revival Band ...

JORJA: Jorja Renn-Chalmers is a brilliant instrumentalist and I am looking forward to her album. As a tour musician she plays what she is supposed to play. When she copies notes and style of Andy I see this as a bow to AM. I don’t think it is fair to talk of her as „that girl“. Of course, I will listen to Andy’s 3 Psalms, too!

Great points made.
Not too sure on the why other than it’s an album I have always played and loved the sound of. I always play it from start to end and just love the feel of it. I was 16 when it was released and I played to death when i bought it . I loved the cover too and remember at that age just reading and reading the lyrics most times I played it.
My most listened to albums are :
RM
1.Stranded
2.FYP
3. CL
4. Siren
5.Manifesto

Although I must admit that the Peel sessions on the recent release have been somewhat hammered in recent weeks and I now put that release up there too.
On the Ferry front my most played are
1. IYM way way out in front of anything else
2. B&G
3. BSB
As with quite a few of you good folk I do believe in any Ferry is good Ferry for the other offerings from our Sultan of Suave.
