Cher Kevin,
Un tres grand merci for posting this.
A salient reminder of how great all this was.
Of course, not everybody got it. I remember the toilets being full of n’er-do-wells hissing that he was a traitor to ‘Roxy’ and questioning ‘Why does he want to play this stuff ?’ or even worse ‘I didn’t realise he’d have an orchestra - I wanted to hear the group’.
Happily the intelligentsia rose above it all and it marked the end of tribalism in rock and the start of a sparkling solo career. We are really so lucky to have him.
Ironically, like the author, I remember ‘Sympathy For The Devil’ as a bit of a mess and definitely not the high point of the evening. That said, the download trailering the new live album sounds superb so maybe I’m misremembering or, the rest of the evening just eclipsed it. Certainly the ballads came of best with his take on ‘Tracks Of My Tears’ being a performance that haunts me to this day. Scintillating !
Salutations,
W2

This sounds fabulous , with Ferry’s vocal at its peak of being Grand Guignol Ferryesque - shades of the Country Life style coming in there - and also of the sound of Viva! RoxyMusic
Add Thompson, Manzanera , Jobson , an orchestra and backing singers , and there it is .. I’m thrilled to bits. These albums were the backbone of my adolescence and I’m more than happy to have them brought to life so many years later.

Thanks Windswept; agreed, the live version of 'Sympathy' to my ears does sound messy, but it's a bit of a glorious mess - better version actually than the one recorded on 'Foolish Things'.

I see Apple (at least) has uploaded 'Smoke Gets in Your Eyes' from the live set - hard to better that studio track, seeing it is one of Ferry's unquestionable high-mark ready-mades, but lovely nonetheless.

Thank you Windswept , and although I said “Ferryesque” , it’s not if it’s yer actual Bryan Ferry.

This sounds really superb. Looking forward to the album.
What a contrast with this surplus sadness: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juuMoLVdaBQ

A contrast indeed. This makes one think. It looks like the audience does too. At least they seem to recognize the songs.
