Good shout Gerry, one of Ferry's best late period songs and hoepfully this thread will generate some sensible conversation and not drift too far.

I used to think it was more 'Here Come The Warm jets' than 'Bete Noire' when I first heard it. The more i playd it the more I could hear it was 'smothered in gold'

The ten bob bontempi drum machine and auto accompaniment at the intro gives the song its charm. The whole song is the perfect blend of what's the best of Eno and Ferry creating what could have been a Roxy Music classic.

Haven't played 'Frantic' for about two years................... guess what i am doing today.

One of the best things Ferry has ever done, and the only later song the equal of his early work. A haunting melody, wistful lyrics, and dreamlike atmospheres take me right back to when we were young. The contributions of Eno push Ferry harder than he seems to have been pushed in ages. I think the influence of another keen creative mind may have been the missing creative spark for years.

This is easily one of my all time favorite songs.

A classic track. I seem to recall that Bryan did it at the Ipswich Regent gig on the Frantic tour.

"I Thought" and "Hiroshima" are two songs easily worthy of being on a Roxy album. And I don't mean that other Bryan stuff is neccessarily inferior, but I don't think many of his solo tracks have the "Roxy feel".

In my view, "Frantic" and "The Bride Stripped Bare" remain his outstanding solo works (although I must say that "In Your Mind" has been growing on me of late.....)

Yeah great track indeedy! It has all the makings of a Roxy song that's for sure, Its obvious Eno certainly left his distinctive mark on this one giving it that real Roxy feel. Shame they can't get together as 'Roxy' and write more of the same stuff and give us all a real treat to look forward to. I'm a dreamer!

'I Thought' was played live a few times on the Frantic tour (early on I think?) one of the dvd's I have of this tour has him performing it, beautiful stuff. However not at the two Manchester gigs we were at, we got 'Wooly Bully' at both shows plus 'Shame, Shame, Shame' on the last one which I just loved as it was the first time I had ever seen it played live.
We certainly had a good old party down the front that night. . :mrgreen:

"I Thought" is a good example of how musical tastes can differ between the fans. Personally, I dislike it more than most of Ferry/Roxy's output. The music (too me) sounds like it was written by a 5 year-old - and no not a Mozart! It starts, plods along, and along, and along, then thankfully eventually finishes. Totally uninspiring IMHO. But, hey, as I said wouldn't life be boring if we all liked the same things.

Truly great track.

John's post triggered a thought I hadn't had before: "smothered in gold" and "hctwj". Can't believe any lyrical reference was meant though, nor do I think the sentiments are the same on BF's lyric. Funny mental connection for a few minutes though.

As for making us think what Roxy could yet be if:
It happened;
Eno and/or andy or Phil or chris thomas were actually in a position to spark BF;
BF's lost voice came back for a few weeks of recording time;
...ah well, we can only dream. And it is just a dream.

When Frantic first came out I was a big fan of "I Thought" but over the years I've gravitated towards BlankFrank's point-of-view. Now it seems to me as a fairly bland concoction, one that could have been so much better realized with TGPT, PM, and AM added into the mix. Think if it had been recorded in a manner akin to PM's album 6PM? That would hold my interest...

I Thought on Frantic is not a bad track, but it just doesn't engage me anymore. Sigh.

Please! I have nothing against Eno, but he didn`t write a single note for Roxy! (The further you go back in time, the more RM equals BF; only on the later records there are some songs co-written with AM and PM.)
"I thought" is very good, though, as well as "Hiroshima", " San Simeon" and, my favourite on the album, "Fool for Love". Talking about BF songs, early or late ones, the best is "Reason or Rhyme"!

Eno didn't write a note with Roxy but turned a few of Ferry's musical ideas into reality, certainly the case with Manzanera and Mackay, Jobson doing string arrangements and Simon Puxley helping with lyrics all uncredited at the time. Not song writing credits but major contributions to the early success of Roxy similar to the contribution Mick Ronson (and lesser extent the rest of the spiders from mars) made to the early success of David Bowie.
