An enjoyable interview with Phil, obviously recorded recently as it mentions his OBE. The interview is mainly talking about his recent book, but Phil mentions that he has a boxed set of CDs coming out in October of his past albums. He also confirms what we all believed to be the case, that the O2 in London in 2022 will be the last time that Roxy ever play live together. The tour (not sure which show) was recorded and filmed and will be released "at some point", although we've had our hopes dashed in the past for similar releases. There was also an intriguing hint at future releases keeping the Roxy name going - presumably archive releases - but there was a mention of maybe a song or two that we haven't heard. Let's hope so!

Interesting - thanks True2Life. I hope if there are any previously unheard songs (as distinct from demos etc), they find a way of releasing them that really does keep the Roxy name alive (or gives it a shot in the arm!) rather than just by way of some enhanced reissues to, ostensibly, people occupying this space and precious few others.

Intrigued fingers crossed.

Was also good to hear that they remain in regular contact with one another!

Thanks for this link, True2Life. I must say that it is always a pleasure to listen to Phil's voice - I think he's a very likeable person. Let's hope for the releases he announced or at least offered the prospect that these things could happen ...

I was a bit surprised but, of course, pleased that the last influence he mentioned in this radio programme were The Kinks - You Really Got Me was part of the first 801 album. I always loved and watched The Kinks led by now 80 years old Sir Ray Davies and although that Roxy/Ferry and The Kinks had very different ways of making songs and music they seem to have certain points of contact (Andy Mackay's Metaphors recorded Waterloo Sunset).

The difference between Ferry's and Davies' songwriting was to be found especially in the lyrics. Ray told stories, wrote about the working class, the things and the people he observed. That's a way of writing lyrics that still works if a musician gets older (Dylan, Springsteen etc.).

Bryan's lyrics were automatically condemned to get shorter, easier, sometimes lacking a certain passion the more his life became steady and settled after his first marriage and the birth of his four sons. We all know the end of it - writer's block, no experiences to write about etc. (see thread about Nick Cave's stories concerning this matter).

Nevertheless I am grateful for all Roxy Music and the members of the band gave to me during the last 52 years.

But that was a little bit off topic - sorry, Phil 8-).

- pianoman - (Peter)
