Dearly beloved, the usual suspects (Lee, Ivor, Jocelyne, Princess Alison and myself) gathered on Friday 19 Feb at St. Anne's, Dean Street, Soho, for a Variety Show to raise funds for the refurbishment of their entrance.

And I thought The Sadistic Mika Band was a surreal experience!!!

In no particular order we were entertained by drag act Lady Lambrini, the Rector with his hand up the back of a dog puppet (rectum joke and all), Puccini opera, the words of St. Joan, Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, an impressionist from Spitting Image and a Honky Tonk pianist!

But our quest was The Emperor who, as ever, didn't disappoint. Accompanied by a pianist, Andy started with a lusty, burlesque interpretation of Sydney Bechet's 'Petit Fleur', followed by an enchantingly fluid rendering of 'Tara'.

The second half saw our hero teaming up for a few numbers with jazz/blues singer Lady Layton. Blowing well and clearly enjoying himself immensely, Andy dispelled the old 'Eddie Rifff' story with suitably breathy, jazzy blues runs which were a joy to hear.

Gracious as always, Andy thanked us for helping the cause and hoped to see us all soon.

Certainly one of the weirdest evenings of my life, but one that will stay with me forever!

You lucky people, sounds like it was a good one. I have seen a couple of photos of Andy at the event and he was looking well and very cheery. :)

Have got a couple of pics on my phone, but when I try to attach them here I'm told they're too big! I'll work on it.

Download them (or e-mail them to yourself, then save them) to your laptop or PC, compress them, then upload to VRM from there?

Not sure that this event would have been my cup of tea, but please post here in advance if Andy announces any further appearances? Many thanks.
