Hate saying this, but that's too rich for me, especially as we may only be talking a couple of songs here?

A shame, but ditto!

I bite the bullet and purchased a ticket. It was an early Christmas present to myself as I missed Andy playing at St. Brides Church back in September and the proceeds go to one of Phil's charities.

It seems that Smudge is going as well so hopefully we can give a full report and post some images following the event.

So Lead Pearl, any chance of a review then?

Well, I landed on my feet at the Hippodrome! Having booked an upstairs seat, I arrived just as the event was about to start and was told by staff that I could sit downstairs instead.

I joined a fellow fan, who I'd met at gigs by the Clang Group & Davy O'List, and shared a table to the left of the stage with him & his wife. Directly behind us was a booth reserved for the Mackay party! :D

A slow first half included dance, poetry and some lengthy spots by the MC (a manager or director of the charity who didn't seem to be a natural public speaker...). There was also some music, with the violin & guitar duets of Papillon, which featured former Roxy member Anna Phoebe, particularly impressive.

A major shout out, too, to Phil's bassist Yaron Stavi, who performed two versatile spots on upright bass. He first played some Bach with a classical violinist, before joining vocalist Sonia Bernardo for three songs, which included stripped back, slowed down reworkings of both Elvis and the Jackson 5! To hear I Want You Back, with Yaron as the entire band on his own, was really quite something!

An auction followed, with some eye watering figures bid for various concert and sporting hospitality packages. Also offered, unseen, was a Roxy Music lithograph signed by all four members (BF, Phil, Andy & TGPT) and described as one of a limited edition of 20. This sounded remarkably like the FYP ones sold in editions of 150 after each of the 2011 reunion gigs for £15; however, the auctioned one, which we never saw, raised a staggering £3500!

A quick look at the merch table during the interval revealed that Phil was generously selling CDs (the new Curious Arts Festival release & Viva La Taranta) for only £6 and CAF posters (unclear whether signed or not) for £4; these are about £10 and £8 plus postage from his webshop respectively.

We then got the main event by Phil's band, which was a 40 minute or so set, very similar to last year's CAF one. An instrumental High Atlas was followed by a More Than This which segued into Hallelujah, at the end of which Phil said "R.I.P., Mr Cohen".

Out Of The Blue featured the dual delight's of the Mackay oboe (he otherwise restricted himself to alto for most of the night) and a stunning table top violin finale from Anna Phoebe; wonderful!

Stormy Weather was followed by Take A Chance With Me, Love Is The Drug and No Church In The Wild, before a closing romp through Let's Stick Together, with Guy Pratt leading the audience in a bit of "dad dancing"!

Andy sounded great in short bursts and Phil seemed to be having great fun, so it is to be hoped that they may tread the boards together more frequently.
