Timely question, I listened to the Horoscope version last night.
I am sure many on this forum might find it a travesty , but I like it, even how he skips some of the lyrics, and sings it in that early 90's vocal. It's cheerful , and a courageous attempt to re-make a Ferry classic.
( oh, sycophant! )
I was also reminded just how old loop de li and Midnight Train are .
I'd forgotten that he used loop de li in the original lyric .

Thanks Avalon Eyes,
Ahaha... Sycophant..
When it comes to Bryans Music...

I heard the Horoscope Version a while ago for the first time and I Really, Really like it...
It almost seems like a Completely Different Song..
I agree about the happy, catchy feel and
Depending on mood, I love Both

I love the original so much, it vies for top spot in my all-time Roxy songs, along with the original Casanova. Maybe because both sets of lyrics define early 70s hedonism, but also because the attendant music matches the lyrics so perfectly, so intelligently.

I first heard the original on a Friday early evening BBC radio show called Round Table, which previewed upcoming new singles and albums. I was in the bathroom taking the obligatory hour to get ready for my Friday night out. When this "new track from Stranded" was introduced I had just lathered up my 16 year old face with shaving foam 4 inches thick and turned my little moon-shaped radio up to err...11....and 6 minutes later was still standing in front of the mirror with the blade never touching my face, it was hypnotic!!

A real tour de force.

This remake is wonderful, very Mamounaesqe, and I think Bryan should be proud of managing to carry it off, it always gets my foot tapping and head nodding when I'm stuck on the sodding train!

It is soooooooo cool.

When I first heard it I was in the bathroom taking the obligatory hour to get ready for work, that is to say, face scrub, pre shave gel, shaving gel, specialist shampoo for grey hair, specialist conditioner for grey hair, and a boatload of vitamins.....

Thank you Rendezvous!

Well Said,
I Love the way you describe your
Roxy/Ferry songs with a detailed memory of What, When and Where...

And that is, to me, why certain songs and those memories become a part of who we are.
Music affects us in So Many different ways, it is indeed more than just Entertainment...

And
Ahahaha
I Love how each version you heard for the first time is tied to the same type of memory...
Still the same amount of Groomin Time

Legend has it that the backing track was completely recorded just as you hear it on Stranded but no lyrics. Ferry said he'd record them the following day. Went home, wrote them, came in next day and did exactly what you hear IN ONE TAKE!?!?!

Well that's the oft repeated story anyway!

Both versions have their own merits and would suit different listening situations but I would sway towards the original version if I had to make a choice.

Interesting info on the newer version from VRM pages...........

This song was recorded during Bryan Ferry's Horoscope sessions around 1991-92. It was originally planned for the soundtrack to the film Basict Instinct but was never released until the soundtrack for Ordinary Decent Criminal in 2000. It's first appearance on a Bryan Ferry product is on his 'One Way Love' single released in Germany 8th July 2002

This version is completely different to the original Roxy Music version on the Stranded album in 1973.

I love the original version so much, it is my all-time favorite song. I also really love Johnette Napolitano's Pretty and Twisted version which like Ferry's Horoscope version skips the intro.
I do enjoy the Horoscope version, but Ferry's '90's sound is my least favorite period of his work, so for me the original wins out.

I confess I even attempted a version of it with my band. I was so awful that it shall never see the light of day.

Pretty and Twisted MOP
