I remember Sunset being played on the ATGB tour at the Royal Festival Hall, and also being disappointed that it was included on the Live at the Grand Rex DVD
Great to see it performed here . Teresa. Thanks for posting.
Ferry was in his late 20's when Stranded came out. A major talent , even then. Mature songwriting.

Really excellent discussions here. You may interested in the lyrical analysis of the song Re-Make/Re-Model on the Roxy blog roxymusicsongs.com

And Sunset - what genius! One interpretation might be that Ferry equates the life-span of the sun (birth/day/demise) to the life-span of another "star" - could be Ferry himself, or, as most likely, his observation of glamour model and/or film star fame. This is a classic approach in poetry that is called personification and was used by Homer and Shakespeare: If humans are seen as ephemeral beings, creatures of a day, then their life follows the pattern of the sun.

Horizon´s appointment you´ll keep
For sunswept flamingos must sleep

Flamingos have been used in literature to symbolize beauty, balance, and grace, which fits our idea of the glamour/beauty model or woman. Flamingos are also pink, which can be used to symbolize femininity or innocence, among other characteristics.

Ferry admits that his "Scenes like these from my dreams/Cover cutting-room floors all over…" which is self-referential in the fact that he is dreaming of this beauty, composing it, editing it - another classic Ferry theme where he yearns for Classic Beauty, but he is not sure if it actually exists - perhaps only in art.

There is so much more! We can state that at the time of writing "Stranded" Ferry was one of the greatest lyric writers, deeply interested in art, classical allusion and romantic poetry.

Sunset – end of my day – my decline

Cheerio for now!

Totally agree that Ferry was one of the best lyricists in music for many many years and even today pulls something out of the bag to compare with his work at the height of his powers.

What has always fascinated me is the lack of what a chorus repeated chorus in many of his best efforts. That's partly a musical thing too but I think its one of Ferry's (and the band's) best traits.

Remake/Remodel
Manifesto
Dreamhome
Casanova
Chance Meeting
Beauty Queen
Virginia Plain
Etc etc

I am listening to Stranded, which was the first Roxy Music album that I bought.
Incredible , even now, 43 years on.

Hi Richard: that is a really good point you make about the non-chorus classics. It certainly is a trait now you mention it! :-)

I will be referring more to that approach in my blog roxymusicsongs.com; thanks for the insight!
Cheers
Kevin
