The live version of If There is Something on Viva! is, arguably, the very pinnacle of Roxy Music...it's flawless and stunning

It's fantasic ( am I wrong, or the Viva version is edited down from a longer version on the complete Oct. 1974 show that's circulating in glorious sound?)

You are right, the Viva! version has a part of EJ's violin solo cut but there are no overdubs.

I've attached a link for the whole show where a few of the songs on Viva came from. The full violin solo can be heard here. Apart from ITIS, the recordings of Beauty Queen iand Prairie Rose are superb.

this 1974 concert reminds me of why i love this band so much. absolutely superlative. whilst i really do like a lot of the frantic-session material - and i still like a lot of BF's material these days - this concert reminded me of why i got into this stuff in the first place.

there's a lot more of Andy's sax on the bogus man as well as more of Phil's guitar both of which seem mixed out on viva

This could be because Bryan didn't rate Phil and Andy in the top would class category. He's always implied that when he talks about enjoying working with top musicisians whenever he's done solo stuff. In addition, he never used Andy on his first seven or eight solo albums. So he may have thought even less of his playing !

It's interesting that Bryan always refers to Phil and Andy as excellent "soloists" when speaking about Roxy nowadays.

I also found it strange that when Roxy reformed in 1979, Neil Hubbard played some of the guitars on Manifesto. Wasn't Manzanera good enough ? After all, he was the only guitarist on the first 5 albums. Wasn't there a funny quote in a paper a few years back (around Flesh + Blood/Avalon) when Manzanera asked an iterviewer to hurry up because he was worried that Bryan would mix him out of a recording if he wasn't there ! Having said all that, I have enjoyed the touches that Hubbard , Soedding and Ollie have brought to some of the songs.

Andy and Phil are great "musicians" rather than great instrumentalists - there is a difference. Anyone with a good technique can move their fingers quickly but it takes more musical ability to play a great slow solo.

Bryan is a great "performer/stylist" rather than a great singer. Very many people love his singing but a large number of people would say that it almost isn't singing at all.
