MJM/AFTERWORLD:

Some weeks have passed by since John and Matthew published their album 'Afterworld' and I have really listened to it many, many times even in my recent holiday in South Tyrolia.

Using headphones you will find out how sophisticated and complex the arrangements are. 'Big Sky' is very catchy, the sort of song we Germans call an 'Ohrwurm' (earworm). It reminds of the Simple Minds and that is not a critical note!

'Lost To The World' is dedicated to Marilyn Monroe (have a look at the video!) and 'Miracle Man' is (like 'Big Sky') a song that resembles of the new wave era - I'm sure that in the 80s they would have been clear frontrunners in the charts.

But the most Roxy-esque song on the album IMHO is 'Empire Station'. The chord sequence reminds of Ferry or Ferry/Manzanera compositions - well done, MJM! Sometimes I think I've heard a bit of a sampled oboe sound, sometimes the guitar reminds of Phil's amp settings or the wah wah sound of Bryan's 90s recordings.

Matthew's voice is very warm, a baritone that always hovers over their soundscape. His fretless bass fits perfectly into MJM's songs.

I started with 'Big Sky' and this song will end my criticism: Not only the catchy refrain makes it outstanding - it's also the sophisticated arpeggio guitar bridge recorded by John, the powerful drumming and the ska-esque off-beat in the second part of the song.

Big album, big buy, big listen - worth every penny - thank you, guys!

Thank you for your kind words.
I am glad that you like the album.
There are no doubt going to be Roxy influences among the many bands that have influenced myself and Matthew over the years.

If anyone else is interested, you can get the album at

www.mjm-music.co.uk

We have CD in stock and the vinyl should be with us next week.
