The "Rules" governing the dividing line between Roxy Music and BF as a solo artist are relatively clear, but they've shifted a bit as the years pass by.

When Roxy started ALL the songs were to be written by Ferry but this changed a bit after FYP when Ferry began to share song writing with PM and AM (leaving aside non-album b-side instrumentals which BF did not necessarily share a co-write). Conversely, BF's solo career was focused on cover songs (TFT) but things shifted a bit when the BF original ATAP was included on his second solo album. And then on his 3rd solo outing he began to cover Roxy songs!

Through Manifesto all Roxy albums were comprised of original songs, something that changed when F&B included cover tunes (8 Miles High, Midnight Hour) This was a big change (although Avalon reverted back to all originals)

For live shows the Siren Tour changed things when both AM and PM got a chance to perform a track from their first solo albums (e.g.Wild Weekend). And then the Avalon tour brought Can't Let Go into the Roxy realm along with the cover tune Like a Hurricane that was never recorded by Roxy in the studio but was subsequently released on a Roxy Music EP (The High Rpad)

Whew. I'm getting exhausted. Why did I start on this...

Then for the 2001 Reunion Tour it was explicitly agreed that ONLY songs formally released by Roxy Music wuold be played; this requirement did allow Jealous Guy to be played because, although it was a caover, it was officially a Roxy release. The short Roxy Tour of 20133 held to this template, but things became looser after 2005 when LST began to appear. in concert.

So what are The Rules. Basically that most of the songs played at Roxy Music concerts are to be original Roxy songs, but exceptions can be made for hits like LST. When it comes to BF solo gigs anything goes, and BF can draw from the Roxy catalog and his solo catalog anyway he wants.

So the Overarching Basic Rule is that BF can do what he wants! Hardly a shock for those who have followed his career for more than a short time...

Chill. A great reply, and much thought put into it. I can't, however, comprehend, how one can be seperated from the other. Roxy/Ferry It's Ferry's vehicle, his baby, so, for the life of me, I don't see anyone else, other than Ferry, able to pull strings.

Great thread. Comments, thoughts, welcome.

Yes, BF pulls the strings when it comes to the Roxy/BF universe EXCEPT that Roxy Music is legally a three-way partnership, meaning that no performance or recording can appear under the moniker Roxy Music unless BF, PM, and AM ALL agree on it.

This is why AM and PM can't go on the road as Roxy Music just as BF can't tour with is solo band under the name Roxy Music. At his solo shows BF can play as much from the Roxy catalog as he wants, but he can't appear as Roxy Music unless PM and AM agree. This of course is something that rankles BF, but he (apparently) takes a measure of satisfaction from the fact that PM and AM are beholdened to him if they ever want to perform as Roxy.

Sigh.

Marriages made in heaven, can they survive in this life...

Elegantly Ageing Hipsters,
I know that current tour, after the sumptuous splendour of 'AEWBF' and like Dylanesque before it, is designed to be a back to the roots guitar based fandango. And, although difficult to judge from a grainy video, I do have to launch the question as to there being a potential sartorial problem with the new band?
Whilst our hero and les girls remain resplendent in their AEWBF outfits and Jorja goes for chic black, some of the newer brethren appear to fall short. Indeed, I think one guitarist is even sporting a 'T' shirt.
Although I accept fully that this is a rock band and they are touring in the land of the back to front base ball cap, I do think that the spirit of Roxology has to be respected. The mantra of "All styles served here" must remain with the emphasis firmly on the word style.Particularly if this fandango is without back drop video or dancers (with the exception of the fabulous Bobbie & Jodie doing double duty).
Maybe I'm worrying needlessly and there is a simple explanation. Perhaps BA lost their luggage - God knows they loose everybody else's — or maybe their tailors just haven't finished their outfits?
Whatever the reason, I hope our hero has the matter in hand and that normal service will be resumed ASAP - Marcus Price would not approve and neither would Anderson & Sheppard.
Regards,
Windswept.

Always good to see what BF drapes himself in and, on tours like ATGB and AEWBF - with the emphasis less on rock and more on a bygone age - equally pleasing to see all accompanying him similarly resplendent. But on a conventional rock tour I don't much mind how the band choose to dress, within the bounds of common decency of course!

Yes they do look underdressed, although I do think BF, and the dancers, should have changed their outfits from the last tour, as they are maybe a bit overdressed.
They don't look too happy either do they? a distinct lack of camaraderie and fun. On saying that, BF rarely looks happy onstage nowadays, except maybe nearing the end of a show.

Sorry Mr Riff but have to disagree with your last comment. We had the pleasure of a front row view of Bryan thoroughly enjoying himself at Shepherd's Bush Empire on 30 November. The evening was quite splendid .

Monsieur Riff,
The great prairie rose is correct.
During AEWBF the whole band were on fire - our hero most of all.
Never, in the history of Roxology have I seen such a fandango. It was an absolute triumph.

Windswept

Funny comments :)

Anyway, I like this new band. I regret OT's departure, but nevertheless, I like the sound of this new line up. Got some energy, all of 'em.

They look good too. To me, I like the glamour of BF and the singers, with the dark grey of the rest of the band. They all look like cool dressers to me, with superior shirt wear for dudes.

Rock on. Sort of.
