Hi Teresa. It was the summer of 1972. The most watched music show on British TV was Top of the Pops. The presenter introduced a new band performing their first single. It was Roxy Music playing Virginia Plain. It was spellbinding and I was hooked. Started buying the records and eventually got tickets for the Country Life tour in 1974. Incidentally Avondale and I were school friends at the time but lost touch for some years but hooked up again through this site. Happy days.

I got the Greatests Hits album in 1979 and loved Do The Strand too. I remember reading the sleeve and thought a band with songs with names like Ladytron and a guy called Manzanera must be something special so I bought the rest of their records and everyone since.

Nice post Teresa. My journey to Ferry/Roxy is a little long winded ,but here goes. Heard Virginia plain on TOTP and down at the youth club in 1972, it sounded weird and very futuristic and couldn't wait for it to finish so we could get back on the dance floor. Strangely we could dance to Bowie as it seamed to be a little weird but more pop/rock !. 1973 I remember watching Cilla Black show I think, with my Gran, and Bryan was singing" What a wonderful world" and I remembered both of us saying he couldn't sing. Mainstream Singers at that time sounded stereo typical, almost classical, conformist. 1975 I watched "Supersonic" which had "Love is the drug" and "Both ends burning" on, which I liked, I think the Sirens caught my eye more than the music. 1977 and I saw "lets stick together" on TOTP which I liked, then the follow up "The price of love" got me hooked. Bought the album, then got Roxys "For your pleasure" Wow from pop to music I would never get board of. I didn't miss the start of Roxy Music but I wasn't mature enough, musically, to catch on to them. It still annoys me that I lost the first 5 years even though I was there, but I landed in the right place in the end.
PS, I remember just getting hooked on BF and was out in Manchester at "The Shady lady" pub ( Now "The Grand Central") and I was just going to walk out the door to the night club( cloisters or Pips ) and Virginia plain came on the jukebox, I stopped dead in my tracks, the hairs on the back of my neck stud up and I couldn't leave until it finished. I had heard it in 1972 but it went over my head, it didn't register. I also didn't realise the singer was Bryan Ferry until my friend told me....... destiny !.

In 1976 here in the States we weren't really hearing music like Roxy, we were just starting to hear some Bowie,
The music being played was mostly Mainstream Rock, i.e., Led Zepplin, a Lot of Pop type songs, Disco, really nothing as
Innovative and Fresh as Roxy...

I first heard/saw Virginia Plain on TOTP as a 14 year old and thought "this is different". My friend bought the single and I quite liked The Numberer (still like some of the more weird stuff). I eventually bought the first album in NOvember 1972, the weekend they appeared on BBC's Full House. I was hooked. Bought every album Roxy and solo the day of release and got my my first live performance at the Rainbow in March 1973.
Have only missed Bryan's last 2 tours because I now live in South Africa and getting to Europe is expensive. But have been to all the other tours from FYP. I even saw him in Montreux doing Slave to Love and Don't Stop The Dance at a TOTP type of show in 1985.
Have adored his music since the beginning and feel blessed to have heard that first song way back when.
People here in South Africa of a certain age (let's say 35 and younger) have never heard of Roxy/Bryan. I am doing my best to educate them.
