I've played You Can Dance, Alphaville, Heartache By Numbers and Shameless repeatedly tonight and to me they go together well. If the rest of Olympia is as good I'll be more than happy.
I've lestened to Heartache/Numbers a few times and I like it better than You/Dance EXCEPT for the drum machine/BIG CLAP that shows up under the first two choruses. Ugh. A very predictable and boring percussion motif. The song deserves better.
Also, I presume that AndyM's oboe is somewhere on Heartache/Numbers (that's what the album credits say) but I sure had trouble hearing it. I guess it's somewhere in the last part of the song buried in the mix... No wonder Andy expressed ignorance about what role he had played in Olympia. His contribution to Heartache/Numebers is negligible as far as I can tell.
And finally, at the risk of being accused of Bryan-bashing, the lyrics to Heartache/Numbers seem to rework the same tired theme of You Can Dance. A bored old guy who can't sleep at night thinking that life revolves around soulless late late disco life. Yawn. I guess the well has run dry...
I agree that I do not like Shameless on the album as much as the earlier version.
I also agree that just listening to the sweetners suggest that it may not be as good or as varied as Frantic. But as others have said - lets reserve full judgement.
