I think you are in the minority here Le Freak. The reaction to the set list suggests that most of us much prefer the stuff from the first 5 albums. Avalon is certainly my least favourite Roxy album although I do really like More Than This.

If we are just talking about hardcore fans then Jerry is clearly right, as a cursory glance at the "Roxy Poll" posted elsewhere on this forum demonstrates. However, the opposite probably applies if we include the preferences of the wider audience.

Why is that, then? Well, I reckon this comes back to Phil's point about the music polarising opinion. This definitely applies to the first 3 (or 4) Roxy albums. They grab the listener by the scruff of the neck and demand a strong emotional response one way or the other. At least as many people are alienated by these albums as are hooked - but if you are hooked then it is often with an intensity that lasts a lifetime (as most of us can testify)!

However, the reverse applies to the late period albums. They are highly polished and crafted, contain some genuine high points, and are perfectly enjoyable and hard to dislike. However, there's the rub i.e. producing the more neutered sound that many people liked was only achieved by foregoing the challenging music that some people loved - and you have to love it to stick with it for over 30 years.

I know that there are some obvious exceptions (le freak is clearly a massive late period fan) but I think this is why so many of the die-hards have such a strong leaning towards the earlier albums.
