Be cool if Bryan would be standing in front of his orchestra conducting, which I'm sure will be the case. What a picture.

It will be interesting. but it won't sell. I would have preferred acoustic/piano/stripped down versions of the same songs. Running Wild ,Fool for Love and The Only Face were great examples of The Great Man at his best Not sure if that would sell either though !

My very first comment on this forum after hearing dstd was "bold". Now I've heard it and the BBC interview a few times, I think it's bold and brilliant. Can't wait for it...and it'll do well I reckon.

I'm trying to be as realistic as possible here It won't get any radio or TV airplay. And who is going to buy it ? Nobody under the age of 40. So,I can't see it selling loads. Although ,I was suprised to hear that Olympia got to number 71 in the US, which was his highest chart position in the US apart from Boys & Girls and Bete Noir which both got to number 63 !

I think it sounds very Post Modern - back and forward and back through time - It's definitely more interesting to me than the bland Dylanesque. It's also a more interesting 40 year celebration than a repackaged first album - especially since we've just had the boxed set .... It might sell - who knows ... He's certainly jumping on the zeitgeist with the new Gatsby movie .... Let's hope for him that the Gatsby movie isn't as rubbish as "Australia" !!

Predicting hit records is an exercise fraught with peril. Who would have thought that Susan Boyle could sell millions and millions of records? Now I don't think that TJA will sell millions of copies. But if it catches the public's fancy and rides the wind of nostalgia for a lost bygone era it could sell in the several tens of thousand, maybe even 100,000 or more. It all depends on a fickle public and how well the record company is able to generate a buzz (and also get the cd into general retail stores (I don't know what the equivalent of Target is in the UK, but that's where the cd, if prominently positioned near the check-out counters, can reach a broad-based audience during the Holiday Shopping Season).
I've listened to DSTD more than a few times over the past week and it holds up well over repeated listenings. I can't say that that will make TJA a "Hit"! But BF engaged some high quality talent for his "Orchestra" and that's no small thing.
I will be interested to see how TJA gets marketed and what kind of commercial "tie-ins" BF and the record company can make for it. Without good promotion it will sink quickly into the depths of the music business netherworld. But with creative marketing it could find notable success. Oh what does the future hold???

I think Bryan should do signed super limited edition (true) album of shellac 78's. Since there are 13 songs on the scheduled release of The Jazz Age there would be a bonus song on the 7th disc. I'll bet he has a few that aren't on the scheduled release. The Olympia limited edition was such a great idea that to do this would be so Duchampian. We'd all have to run off and buy Gramophones to hear that 14th song. Or scour flea markets for old stereos that had the 78 setting. In regards to live performances Bryan could conduct while the 3rd chorus only is sung by Bessie Smithism vocalist. Anyway that's how a lot of the old 78's were done. I have an old 78 of Smoke Gets In Your Eyes like that. I'm so looking forward to this record.

as a marketer, not that Bryan's website replies to emails, I'd say: "do some major media buying from big name websites like Rolling Stone, etc."
so far nada, yes, we all know RM & BF need to do this better.
Just got an email from a DJ from Montreal's major rock station who is a BF fan, and told me he doesn't know what to think, yet.
who woulda thunk to do album like this! Bryan's still the master innovator!

I don't think that either BF or his record company will be inclined to make any "Major Media" buys to promote TJA simply because they have to keep costs down in order to have any hope of making money off the new release. I think BF & Co. learned a hard lessen w/ Olympia after they poured a lot of money into the album cover shoot and into an expensive video for U Can Dance that generated little long term buzz and only scant sales.
IMHO the audience for TJA will not be not cultivated by ads in Rolling Stone, but in up-scale mags oriented toward a reasonable affluent Post-30 Somethings. It TJA were to be released in The States I think a small ad in The New Yorker or The Atlantic Monthly would be worth considering. And it might sound strange, but a small ad in The Economist would not be so far-fetched given the type of audience that will likely enjoy TJA.
BF & Co. don't have a big promotional budget for TJA, which is why they'll need to be creative and focused in allocating the resources at their disposal...
