there is a great photograph of the two of them chatting just after Ferry has gone offstage in New York during Roxy's Manifesto tour in 1979.

There was actually a series of photos that night...and some showed the third master present too: John Cale. Can you imagine that much musical genius in one drunken bar: Bowie and Ferry with their inspiration from the Velvets?

Mmm. It's exactly around that time. I think it's the same series. But there is one somewhere with Cale in it too. Let me see if I can find it...

Haven't found it yet.

But I did google "john cale bryan ferry david bowie" just now and looked at "Images". Fellow ageing and non ageing hipsters, u gotta see these pix. They're v cool. Loads of great Bowie and Ferry images, many I haven't seen before. Funny how a particular google string turns up some new stuff...

New Bowie album is fantastic. Sadly, however, it throws into stark relief how unoriginal and lazy Bryan Ferry has been since (in my opinion) the masterpiece that is 'In Your Mind', Ferry's last lyrical and musical peak.

Shame in a way it's history sort of repeating itself!

Number 1 in the uk album charts this week, he certainly knows how to create a buzz. When was the last time a BF or Roxy album created managed the same? (General public rather than fan forums)

I never had Bryan down for a "lazy" artist.

It's a great photo and one of the few times the two men have been pictured together. I don't think Ferry is a lazy artist any more than the ten-year hiatus between David Bowie's last two albums are proof of his idleness. Since In Your Mind, an album he has professed not to like that much, Ferry has produced four real masterpieces, The Bride Stripped Bare, Avalon, Boys and Girls and Frantic plus the flawed and beautiful Mamouna, reformed Roxy Music and toured pretty constantly. I am not a jazz fan but The Jazz Age is the product of a mind that is still sharp and inventive at 67.

BF is not lazy. Some of his projects take a long time to complete, but he is not sitting around doing nothing for long stretches at a time. What I (and at least some other people) find frustrating is the way that he expends his time and energy on activities that don't seem all that interesting or inspiring.

Clearly he devotes an enormous amount of time to private gigs where, it seems, he sings his greatest hits accompanied by a couple of few musicians playing along to a pre-recorded track. This certainly seems to pay the bills and allows him to live in the manner to which he has become accustomed, but it appears to be performance devoid of any creativity once it has been done over and over and over again....

I'm glad he's getting out on the road to play live and promote TJA. I will be interested in seeing various performance clips that get posted to youtube.
