It is well worth carving off a hour to watch this programme. It was a real treat from start to finish.

They also aired a Stax review from Norway (I think) from 1967. It is definitely worth catching this too if they are repeating it or if it is on i-Player. I planned to have an early night last night to catch up on some badly needed sleep but couldn't drag myself away from the TV while these shows were on.

Me too, ended up watching all three.

What a treat it was to watch this.
I saw this show back in '67 at the Watford Odeon of all places. It was a complete blast and it doesn't surprise me in the least that it had such an effect on our hero. That whole Stax gang were fantastic but, of course, Otis was the king.
Back then, musical tastes were quite tribal and many of my school friends considered me quite a strange bird because of my love of soul in general and stax volt in particular. The Incredible String Band and the like were establishing a counter culture and many of my peers wanted to wear that strange hat. For me I was a Mod and a soul man thru' and thru' and apart from anything else, I found those hippy clothes quite ridiculous!
Fortunately,I was lucky enough to see Booker T last year at Ronnie Scotts and he is still amazing — lovely to see. Unfortunately the MGs are somewhat depleted. Al Jackson (drums) was murdered and Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass) has also passed whilst Steve Cropper (guitar) although still alive and kicking wasn't playing with him but the legend lives on and I think it's great that Geordie's favourite son has songs like 'Hold On I'm Coming' and 'Move On Up' in his repertoire. It's a fitting tribute to those that have influenced him and testimony to the fact that this stuff is completely timeless.

Those who enjoyed last Friday night's offerings on BBC4 may be similarly pleased with that channel's offerings for tonight: an hour (21.00) of Bobby Womack's story, followed by an hour (22.00) of Ike & Tina Turner, Wilson Pickett etc in concert, then almost two hours (from midnight) of The Stax Story.

If that's not enough, there's an hour of Etta James on Sky Arts 2 tomorrow at 23.30...

Caught the tail end of the Fri night BBC4 documentary about soul singer Charles Bradley, who cut his debut album a couple of years ago at the age of 62!

Sounded like quite a voice from what little I heard, so must catch the repeat tonight (well, 00.20 tomorrow, to be precise...).

I mention this partly because he's on the undercard for BF's gig at Glynde in 3 weeks time...
