ON a similar thread, who would we like to see do a Ferry/Roxy original.

Here are my suggestions:
Kate Bush Strictly Confidential
Bowie Both Ends Burning
U2 Mother Of Pearl
Sade Windswept
B.B. King This Is Tomorrow
Hipsway. A Really Good Time
George Michael Sensation
The Big Dish Manifesto
Savage Garden Would You Believe
Tom Jones Love Is The Drug
Sting Zamba
Beautiful South Pyjamarama
Travis Just Like You
Alison Moyet The Only Face
Bowie Whirlwind
Macie Gray To Turn You On
Pretenders Spin Me Round

Off the top of my head, I would go for:

Peter Hammill - If There is Something.
Todd Rundgren - Psalm.

I think I would enjoy their renditions.

Cher Leader,
An interesting question and some worthy proposals.
Here are some from my dream list:

*MOTHER OF PEARL - Anna Calvi. I love this lady to bits. Her debut album was stunning. She has a fabulous voice and an image straight off a Roxy cover. Live she is just tremendous. No wonder Eno gave her his seal of approval. I'd love to see her take on MOP but equally there are a few early Roxy numbers I'd like to see her have a go at.

*RUNNING WILD - Cat Power. The girl with the sexiest voice in the world. Like our hero, she really knows how to interpret a song and bring some value to it. Check out her version of Bob Dylan's 'I Believe In You' on her fabulous 'Jukebox' album and you'll know what I mean.

*SLAVE TO LOVE - Betty Lavette. Betty is the thinking man's Tina Turner. She has a soul voice to die for and if you think you've heard it all, listen to 'Nights In White Satin' on her album 'Interpretations - The Great English Songbook'. Come to think of it, listen to anything off that and you'll get the idea.

*TENDER IS THE NIGHT - Boz Scaggs. The Scagster is definitely the man for this one. His voice is as cool as ever. Great range and it caresses like baby cashmere. He could nail this.

All for now but I'll continue to ponder.
Regards,
Windswept.

At the risk of taking us momentarily off topic, I saw Bettye in concert last night and she could sing anything by anybody and rip your heart out. She's becoming quite famous for soul re-interpretations of rock songs; last night, in addition to the Moody Blues' classic, we got a pair by Neil Young (Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere & Heart Of Gold) and a simply astonishing version of The Who's Love Reign O'er Me.

To bring us vaguely back on topic, maybe Bettye could bring a touch of church to Psalm or put a gender-unspecific twist on Dream Home? ;) Certainly something dark in mood anyway...

Cher Monsieur Smudge,
You are clearly a 'thinking man' and bravo for seeing our Betty. Isn't she just marvellous? Her biography is well worth a read. She's been a very naughty girl!
Anyway, back on subject. As she's actually my choice for this tribute album, I reserve the right to have her cut 'Slave To Love' but if we have to have a back up, maybe we could get her to do to do '2HB'?
In any event whatever she does it will be an absolute killer. We are talking about Ferry level interpretations here, not covers!
Regards,
Windswept

J O'B : great thread idea.

So far, some excellent suggestions.

I reckon a lot of BF/Roxy songs can be supercharged by a good cover, turning an ok track into a great (eg willy de ville and slave to love ).

Kate Bush, Siouxsie/Severin and Bowie all "get" Bryan's songwriting.

My 3 pennies worth:
Kate: Chance Meeting, with extra bush eeriness
Siouxsie (with a great Severin baseline and co-arrangement): No Strange Delight
David: Manifesto, with all his majestic presence
PS how about Lydon and Sign of the Times?

Heaven :D

Absolutely bloody marvellous. I'd sell an organ for this album.

Not the Hammond B3, though; it'd be irreplaceable... ;)

Mes Amis,

Having exercised those little grey cells further I would like to add to my selection for the tribute album:

'My Painted Smile' : THE CIVIL WARS. This duo are just too cool for school. Their debut album was fabulous and amongst some originals, they threw in a couple of great interpretations including, Cohen's 'Dance Me To The End Of Love'. Again, they are in the interpretation rather than the cover business and given that they are great to look at (Joy Williams is smoking) they will be visually superb for any video or tribute concert.

Virginia Plain: ARCADE FIRE. No tribute to our hero would be complete without including our marching song. But, trying to imagine a band that would do it justice is not easy mais finalement, I thought of AF. I know Geordie's favourite son rates them and so he should. They'd fit right in and deliver us a stonking version.

Windsept: ANTONY & THE JOHNSONS. I know our leader has Sade down for this one and she would be a good stab but we owe it to the boy to have his songs interpreted rather than covered and Antony Hegarty is the artist who can make it happen plus his voice is one of the most beautiful on the planet. Furthermore, as Windswept is my monica I think it only right that I choose!

Regards,
Windswept
