DCJ wrote: So this leads me to wonder, what happened between EJ and BF that they went their separate ways after Siren/Let's Stick Together" It was a split so wide that it's hard to imagine that they spent an enormous amount time together touring and recording '73-'76. What happened?
I'm not sure what happened between EJ and BF, but I think Phil said at the time of Manifesto that Eddie wasn't asked back. Eddie was busy working with Frank Zappa and also Jethro Tull if I remember correctly. I'm sure Iain Anderson paid very well for his services. I did read that Eddie was offered to become a fully paid up member of Roxy around the Siren Album/tour. With regards ATWT appearing on Siren - can you imagine the infighting if Eddie had two tracks on the album and Phil or Andy had to forgo one of their co-writes? Andy was particularly upset with 'Viva' as none of his co-writes were on there.

RoxySiren: Good to know you love ATWT. It wasn't my intent to undermine such affection! I just have a different perspective...
Regarding Fripp, I think he has given us some great guitar solos/music. Baby's On Fire is GREAT. No Pussyfooting is also great (although I must admit that I prefer to play the 33rpm album at 45rpm to speed things up a bit), And the guitar tracks he laid down for Bowie/Eno's Heroes are timeless in their power and emotional impact. But the solo on ATWT is, IMHO, not one of his finest moments. But others might disagree...

I have always thought Fripp's solo on ATWT was a good piece of work in isolation but I felt it made a huge spike in the song. It might have been interesting to see what Manzanera would have done.
Like mentioned earlier in this great thread. BF's vocals are less camp and more of a laid back crooner on this song and it's because of this and the warm strings that I find the guitar too jarring.

I've always quite liked this song for nostalgic reasons - but - because of some of the lyrics and parts of the melody I could almost imagine it in a Disney movie .. maybe Mary Poppins ... I can hear Glynis Johns singing it to comfort the kids ... the smokey rooftops of old London town in the background...

Eddie joined Frank Zappa's touring band for a year, during 76/77, he then formed UK with John Wetton. During 79' UK supported Jethro Tull on a US tour. After UK had split Ian Anderson asked EJ to join Tull for an album and tour.

Correct, Mr RIFFF. Jobson is on the cover of Zoot Alures, although he did not play a note on that album. And according to urban myth regarding Jobson's first gig, Zappa said "Forgive him Bryan, for he knows what he did". Anyway, if anyone is interested, check out Eddie's solo on Zappa's Black Napkins. ("Give the boy a break").

I'm aware that EJ left for the Zappa band and then continued on his own course. But the split with BF and Roxy did not seem to occur on a friendly note... And there has been nothing between EJ and the other members of Roxy in all the years since. It's weird IMHO...
Ive gone back and listened to ATWT a couple of more times, and it's grown on me a bit. I was too negative in my original comments; the part that I find least enjoyable is the heavy string section with Fripp's solo on top. It really seems out of place, and the solo doesn't end very gracefully as it simply gets faded out in time for the next vocal.
It seems like a track that never really got finished; it's more like a proto-mix that BF never bothered to figure out a way to smooth out and make sound more coherent. But I can see why people on the Forum like it...

Yes, it was on a Japanese Mamouna EP - a nice little collection. The song has a great potential, but somehow seems to be unfinished. The vocal and piano makes a promising start - but the guitar is like an intruder. I`m sure manzanera, Spedding or Ollie could have done something much better out of that!

DCJ wrote: It sure doesn't sound much like the rest of the tracks on Siren... It definitely doesn't. I may have missed the point here (and apologies if I have) but I presume that this is because this particular recording was not the one under consideration for inclusion on Siren. Can anybody confirm this? That being the case, I wonder if a Roxy work in progress version of this track was laid down but rejected for Siren - and. if so, could it be lingering in the vaults somewhere? I guess that is just wishful thinking..........

The last thing that I know of that Eddie Jobson did with a Roxy connection was to guest with Phil Manzanera's 801 on the Live At Hull CD recorded in 1977.
As far as I know She Sells and As The World Turns were first laid down the same day in early June 1975. I would imagine the version that ended up as a BF solo track is from the same session but completed at a different time. I would guess the initail take would maybe just have been BF and Jobson
