It was ironic that TGPT replaced AN (given that AN replaced TGPT in 1980), allegedly because BF wasn't happy with the drums on the Olympia tour. Having said that it was BF's intention to use TGPT for live performances from the F+B tour onwards until TGPT had his accident and apart from a couple of tracks on frantic BF has continued to use TGPT in that manner on and off since though maybe that has come to an end now.

Musically Literate Hipsters,
I am struggling to understand our hero's percussion strategy.
During the great ATGB tour we had the fabulous John Sutton helming the drums and supported by the incredibly talented Julia Thornton - I thought their sound was absolutely perfect.
For Frantic we had TGPT and AW for Dylanesque both worked well.
Then we had double drummer duty for Olympia. It was fine but I didn't particularly see what it brought.
Now we have CO when the incredibly capable John Sutton is on the same gig. Again why the double duty?
If you are comparing flat out rock drummers IMNSHO, TGPT is no.1, AW is no.2 and CO is a distant no.3
If you want somebody that can play rock and jazz, Sutton is your man.
How has it become so complex and what do you think the strategy is?
Regards,
Windswept.

Here's a theory...

BF really likes the exotic look that CO brings to the stage. TGPT certainly looks good in his basic Black Tees, but CO is a great looking Afro-Pop Diva who accentuates the BF band's urbane hip visual style.

According to the sleeve notes, "Tara" is now a Ferry composition.

One can just imagine the completely avoidable frustration this will cause...

Absolutely. Silly and a shame. Whilst this is likely a cock up rather than a conspiracy , this kind of thing will get back to the co author/writer adding a little smidgen of acid into the stomach.

How can this be?

BF is, if nothing else, a control freak. How many times did he look over -and then approve - the graphic design for the DVD?

I must admit that I have found it odd that BF features one of Andy's signature Roxy songs on his solo tour gigs. And he even posted the Tara from the 2011 Oakland gig on the Bryan Ferry youtube channel (it is beautiful, with Spedding playing some amazing guitar)

Presumably, the accountants know where to send the royalty checks...

The 2011 Lyon show (that's on the DVD) featured Andy Newmark and Tara Ferry on drums. At the end of the summer 2011 TF stopped appearing with the BF band and in the fall TGPT was brought in to replace AN (TGPT played solo on the American leg of the tour and was also the drummer for the Berlin gig in December 2011). The next spring (2012) Cherisse Osei started making appearances with the BF band (She's there at the Belfast/Titanic gig where BF sings Song of the Sirens) and there were a few gigs where she and TGPT shared the drumming chores.

Out of this BF decided CO was to be the BFO's rock drummer and over the past year TGPT, AN, and TF have not been seen appearing with BF. My sense is that CO is also serving as the Corporate Band drummer for BF, supplanting Emily Dolan Davies.

If I had my druthers, I would have TGPT playing with the BFO and drumming on the forth-coming BF album. But that is not to be. I much prefer CO over AN and/or TF as the band's drummer and I think she has a really solid, muscular sound. That said, I still wish the TGPT was in the drum seat...

Sorry I seem to have got things a little wrong. I must have seen CO drum somewhere thinking it was the Lyon show?
I would have PT too but it seems as though BF has cut all of "the others" (as he calls them) loose again.

Mes Amis,
What a great little vignette this is.
I remember the performance from the Vienna 'Olympia' show and it certainly a great treatment. Fabulous performance from Jorja, Spedding and the amazing Mr.Good.

Apart from Olympia, the album covers and packaging have been dire for 20 years . Either he's lost the passion for this side of his output or he's delegating to people who aren' t up to it. I can remember when the announcement of a new Bryan or Roxy CD or tour was a major event. Now ,it just seems to slide past most people.

I thought The Jazz Age was a very nicely designed cd package and Olympia also looked good. I never bought Dylanesque so can't comment on it, but I thought Frantic was an uninspired design. Mamouna was OK but I must admit I never really understood why it featured an 19th century horse painting (!). Taxi was OK but nothing special...

I can't say that the overall design of the 2001 Roxy Tour Album was fantastic, but I thought it was well conceived and I liked how it gave specific information about where/when each track was recorded.
