As Time Goes By

Studio Album - September 1999

Despite several reports from interviews and articles that Bryan had been working and writing with Dave Stewart from Eurythmics, Johnny Greenwood from Radiohead, Bernard Butler, Bryan didn't feel that his new songs were ready to release. He had been working with arranger Colin Good for the film Richard The Third which Bryan had recorded Sweet And Lovely & If I Didn't Care for. He continued on this thread and did what he had planned to do for some time in that he would record an album of songs from the '30s with an acoustic ensemble. This resulted in the album As Time Goes By. The album became a huge commercial success and sold steadily over the months following its release. It peaked at number 16 in UK with the title track being released as a single but not making the top 100.

Several other songs were recorded for this album including If I Didn't Care which was featured on the single and he performed I Can't Get Started With You during the tour following this album. Ferry also recorded for the second time You Go To My Head but with an arrangement more like the Billie Holiday version and also the 30s standard 'Some Other Spring' These tracks have never been released.

His re-orchestrations of songs by the likes of Rogers & Hart and Cole Porter are not far from the originals, save for the use of his trademark synthesizer stylings. Ferry has tapped some of Europe's best jazz and big band musicians to back him up on the album, including Enrico Tomasso of Ray Gelato's Giants who adds his flavorful trumpet throughout; Colin Good on piano; Alan Barnes on tenor sax; and guitarist Nils Solberg.
